357177 2005-05-21 05:00:00 A mate recently upgraded his computer to one running XP.

Some difficulty was experienced running his old DOS programmes but this was overcome by installing the programmes directly into the root directory as opposed to a folder.

All was fine until he installed the latest XP updates.

Now he can’t run any of his DOS programmes. He gets a message to the effect that the file system is not supported.

Anybody throw any light on this matter?

One DOS programme effected is a CAD programme with all his drawings on it.

357178 2005-05-21 05:10:00 Would really help to know what the error message was, but my crystal ball suggests
"C:\Windows\System32\Autoexec.nt The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications."

If so, the solution is here:

357179 2005-05-21 06:52:00 You are indeed correct GF. Your clairvoyance is exceptional. :)

I just checked with the mate and he confirms the message.

Now for the fix. :badpc:

I’ll keep you posted.

Many thanks for your help.

Just a quick English correction, it is affected.

affected
To have an influence on or effect a change in:

effected
Something brought about by a cause or agent; a result

usage
The confusion of the verbs affect and effect is not only quite common but has a long history.

Effect was used in place of affect as early as 1494

The noun affect is sometimes mistakenly used for effect. Except when your topic is psychology, you will seldom need the noun affect.

357182 2005-05-21 12:56:00 From the definitions given,
1. the DOS program was affected by the upgrade
2. that some difficulty is now being experienced was effected by the upgrade

Surely the DOS program cannot be the result of the upgrade as presumably it was already present in the system prior. Unless it is a trojan of some sort... :p

357184 2005-05-21 22:51:00 the answer I fear BM may be found within, if its autoexec.nt problem. This subject has been covered in great depth in this forum. A search of the forum using the keyword autoexec.nt and maybe my nicname (just to narrow it down some) may give you the answer.
Happy hunting

357185 2005-06-06 02:34:00 All fixed. The link godfather provided produced the answers.

Took a wee while for the mate to pluck up the courage to have a go at the fix and today was the day.

So, his DOS drawing programme is up and running again.

Thanks to all concerned.

I always thought a thing is affected. Whereas you can cause an effect.
