| 356899 | 2005-05-20 06:22:00 | Hi fellow F1ers, I have a friend living in Dunedin. He wants to be rescued from Dial Up Hell, but Woosh is not available. He will be using internet for a few online games, minimum webcam chat and mostly surf the web. He is happy to pay up to $50- per month. Would be great if any Dunedinites could respond with their experiences and advice. Thanks, |

| 356900 | 2005-05-20 09:09:00 | There are a couple of small wireless providers (scarfies.net & synaptic.net.nz) but DSL is probably the easiest. Take your pick. Orcon & Maxnet do flat rate 256K for $50. I use Maxnet. Fine for web but a waste of time for any P2P. As for gaming, have had a lot of trouble even connecting with various C&C titles which I assume is related to their traffic shaping. Haven't tried FPS gaming but pinging jetstreamgames.co.nz gives 78ms and the US is ~300ms if it is any help. |

| 356901 | 2005-05-20 13:45:00 | Orcon as slowly getting better .... $50 for "unlimited" 256K Don't know if I recommend them for the gamer though as there are reports of horrible ping times (see Orcon's forums) Be careful as there are places in Dunedin where the copper telephone network is screwed up, meaning you may not get ADSL (or at least reliable connections). |
