356611 2005-05-19 04:51:00 So, I made thread a couple of days ago about needing help building a custom PC, but it got buried way under and I figured I might as well just scrap it and make a fresh thread.

I abandoned the idea of getting anything premade, and decided I want to build it from the ground up. I have most of the parts I want selected already with the help of some very kind people here.

Nforce4 motherboard
Amd 64 3500+ CPU
2 512 sticks of RAM
Geforce 6800GT 256meg DDR3 : www.zipzoomfly.com
Audigy soundblaster 2:
www.zipzoomfly.com
160 gig HDD:
www.zipzoomfly.com

Now I need help selecting a case... I'm guessing a full tower is the way to go, can someone point in the direction of one that would fit my setup?

Also, what else will I need to build this PC? And will it be able to run High-end games with this setup?

356612 2005-05-19 04:57:00 I was just running over the price of this system, and I think it is going to end up costing too much... I probably should have thought of that first before i got so carried away.

So which route would you guys recommend I take? Should I just find something somewhat bare and build it up, or should I buy something premade that's cheap and exchange some of the parts for better ones?

Damn. I am in over my head here.

356613 2005-05-19 05:01:00 Building up a system gives you total freedom of choice esp wrt vital components like the motherboard - brand / chipset / features eg LAN or firewire / usb2 slots etc . Your original list was missing an optical drive [ dvd / cdrw etc ] , a modem if you're going to connect to the net via dialup , and perhaps a floppy drive if you have use for one ... and an operating system . Otherwise nice selection in my view . Happy gaming . KatiMike (242)
356614 2005-05-19 05:07:00 Say I was to buy a system that is pretty much premade, I could still swap out things like the motherboard if I wanted too right?

I have my eye on this system,

cgi.ebay.com

but I'm not sure how the bidding system works. If I were to say double the current bid that is at $1.00, say half-an hour before the auction closed, and won, would I only have to pay 2 dollars for this entire system + S&H?

356615 2005-05-19 05:49:00 Ok scratch that, I'm back to building my own from the ground up. Sorry, I'm really indecisive...

So all that was missing from that was a just CD drive pretty much? (I have a broadband connection and modem already, and no use for a floppy)

So what case should I look at to put it all in, I just need to find a case that all that will go in. As cheap as possible. Can you guys help me out? Also, will all this stuff run together?

356616 2005-05-19 06:05:00 If you want cheap just pick the cheapest middle tower case you can find, and replace the PSU with the best quality you can afford. Rob99 (151)

Lots of retailers charge very little for assembling it for you . The adavantage is that misassembly becomes their problem . . .

No mention of the motherboard brand . I personally don't like going cheap with motherboards (but don't get the latest either as you can end up being a tester)

The 3400+ seems $100 cheaper .

1 GB of RAM seems a good idea but make sure it isn't cheap and nasty .

Is the vid card PCI Express ? . . at least you aren't getting those crazy (price-wise) ultra versions .

You could lose the soundcard and use on-board sound to save some $$$ .

160 GB HD sounds okay make sure it has a good warranty .

Get a good quality power supply (and a quiet one) . Poor quality power supplies cause no end of problems with games .

full tower is a waste really - get a midsize tower that will be big enough that you can get at the motherboard without having to use an endoscope . Potential to save lots of $$$ with case selection - you do need to make sure it will have good enough airflow .

Yes you can play high end games but remember that stability is very important .

No mention of some sort of screen - don't be one of the strange people who have this super duper base unit but still use a horrible 17'' or 15'' CRT :D

356618 2005-05-19 19:05:00 Well, I'd probably only be paying about 50-100 more for a full tower, so I figure I might as well not half-ass this thing.

How about this case that comes with a power source, and looks like it has plenty of ventilation:

Also, about the soundcard, is it even necessary to buy anything? Or will this come with everything I need to hook up speakers? (Honestly, I really could care less about sound quality. I just want to be able to hook up speakers and hear what I'm playing.)

I also just found this bundle:

A good idea to buy?

356619 2005-05-19 23:49:00 Anyone? Metalive (7167)
356620 2005-05-20 00:13:00 The nominated case is fine,Onboard audio is all you need, the sound quality is excellent,The "bundle" is good gear but that mobo suports 2 video cards running in tandem, While it gives the best performance its overkill if your only intending to run the 1 video card.
