356665 2005-05-19 11:09:00 I have an LG DVD writer here (present from overseas sister, so warranties, RMA's and the like are going to be tricky) in what looks like an aftermarket case (although I could be wrong given my limited experience with these things). After changing the daft Brit cable for a local version and finding a space on my powerboard for it (eh, who needs a printer anyway?), I turned it on and started up Windows (XP Pro, Dell Dimension 8300, fairly new system). Dropped the driver CD in, told the hardware wizard to go for broke, and boom, BSOD (no drivers mentioned in the stop message, just four memory addresses)

Restarted computer, took driver CD out, told Hardware Wizard to look at windows update. Boom, BSOD.

Turned the DVD writer off, restarted windows, took a look at the driver CD. Looks like I got a USB2 Mass Storage Device driver CD, which doesn't actually help me terribly much. Yes, a DVD-writer is a mass-storage device, but the drivers I can see mention absolutely nothing about LG, and it seems like the drivers are actually for a USB2 external hard drive.

From what I can see (from the oh-so-informative sheet of paper I got with the drive), it looks like I have an LG GSA 4163B drive (the picture I've seen of it, taken from www.xbitlabs.com looks identical on the faceplate) or something similar. Would I be best off popping the external case off to get a look at the exact model number?

Also, if it is a 4163B, where do I find drivers for it? LG's site is somewhere less than helpful :(

356666 2005-05-19 22:28:00 If the DVD burner uses USB2, I would use a USB 2 cable .

The cable you changed, was/is it USB 2?? The driver should be on the cd it came with . The only other driver cds and dvds use are for DOS, which XP doesnt really have .

Usually XP installs the windows driver for cd's / dvds . Thats all u need . What program have u got to burn files etc to the DVD burner?

Is the onboard USB, USB 1 . 1 or 2??

According to the LG site, the 4163B is the internal 16x super multi dvd writer

The 5160D is external 16x . The 5120D is 12x external . 4160B is internal 16x . The 4120B is 12x internal .

The site for LG is http://www . lgservice . com

Is this the site you went to??

356667 2005-05-20 01:52:00 Speedy has said - XP uses its own drivers.
Unplug the drive, Boot to Windows, plug the drive back in and XP should pick it up and install it without needing a CD.

"Looks like I got a USB2 Mass Storage Device driver CD," In fact thats exactly what it is - its not treated as a CD exactly. But are you sure its an XP driver on the CD? I bet its for win98/ME as they would need one.

To use USB2 you will need to have SP1 or SP2 on your PC.

Ive never been a big fan of Lg, but some people would swear by them they're the best...
YMMV.

Question: Does it work on another PC? Have you taken it to work perhaps and tried it?

356669 2005-05-20 08:19:00 No problem now, all sorted. Took out the USB cable (although it's still hanging out the back of my PC), put in the firewire cable, worked like a charm. Rugrats (6953)
