357289 2005-05-21 21:53:00 Hello experts,
A friend of mine has had me helping him install his new ADSL connection and we have run into problems.

ADSL jetstream via snapnet

at the moment we are trying to connect it through his laptop and once we have it running we will install a wireless network and run his PC and his media centre from the connection as well as the laptop he also takes to work.

we are at a stage where we get a connected signal on the status bar and the computer can see the modem but when we start Internet explorer we get a "could not open search window" message on screen.

We have looked at the lan status and that appears to be correct except that the DNS address seems to be incorrect it starts with a 10 and I think it should start with 2**.** (200 or some figure in the 2-300 range).
is there someone who can shed some light on this problem as we have been battling it for a week now.
Another thing which may be relevant, what sort of cable should we be using from the modem to the phone line filter? I think at the moment he is using a normal phone cable (?RJ45).
Thanks in advance.

357290 2005-05-22 02:22:00 Ring a tech if you have been doing it for a week.
The modem manual should tell yoiut the routers IP.
Or do an IPCONFIG - the gateway is the routers IP. Chnage the network connection settings TCP/IP to auto.

357291 2005-05-22 02:46:00 Is this an external ADSL router or what?
A brand/model name of your ADSL router/modem would help.

Sounds like the router admin control panel can be found at 10.0.0.1 - is it setup correctly?

It is a plain old telephone cable from the spliter into your ADSL modem/router.

Do you get a response with this command: ping 210.48.100.12

357292 2005-05-22 06:44:00 Thanks PCTech & Gibler.
we have been in consultation with three different techs including taking the laptop and modem into Snapnet and the same problem persists.
The Modem brand is Billion, model (I think) is 7100 and it is an external modem I will Have a look at the settings you mention here and see if I can isolate the problem from there.
Thanks again,
Rob

357293 2005-05-22 11:42:00 If you have the router properly configured with the corect logon details and password and connected you should have a ppp connection and the ADSL signal light should be lit on the modem, be aware it can still be lit even if you don't have the correct logon/ password etc. It is merely showing the signal is present from the Telephone Exchange. Therefore ensure that logon etc is correct eg Myname.xadsl@xtra.co.nz

Other than that go into Explorer/ Tools / Internet Options and tick never dial a connection. In some cases after this a reboot is a good option but otherwise you should then be able to surf the internet.

Thanks for that Exwesty, but as I said in my original post the connection is via Snapnet. I have checked the logon which they say is username@na.co.nz We are pretty confident that the problem lies with in the DNS address but don't know what to do now. The problem my friend has and I am sure others have run into similar with smaller ISPs is that they don't offer a out of business helpdesk so he can only talk to people from his office at work during the day and they are not able to talk him through issues one at a time as the connection is at his home.

357297 2005-05-25 10:46:00 Thanks to all who posted here . I just thought that you would like a headsup .
It turned out that the isp had given him the address for his business connection and he was trying to log on to that . It doesn't work!!!!
He had to go back to basics with them and go through all the settings and just by chance mentioned that he had a home and an office connection and "ere they giving him the details of his home connection?" "No, sorry . "
So all is well now, except that it drops out from time to time .

Is that normal for ADSL?
