| 358194 | 2005-05-24 23:30:00 | Hi The new PC arrives on Saturday (yahoo) :) which probably means Monday (boo). :horrified Anyhoo, I'm being careful about what software to install on it as I want to keep it as clean and under control as possible. I'm allowing the kids (hah 18 and 21) to have one file sharing application and they've said that WinMX is their weapon of choice. What I want to know is are there any hidden nastys on WinMX that I need to know about (spyware etc)? Incidentally, I'm dealing with the virus side of it by using AVG. (Up to now I've used McAfee but an IT guy I work with said the AVG is up to the job now so I'll give it a go). |

I've had viruses that have downloaded as fake files but AVG has found everyone before any damage was done. If you stick to music/ mp3's only then its very rare to get a virus. Its when looking for serials, cracks, exe's,zip files etc that you take the risk with viruses. Just be carefull to scan every download before opening. Using a browser other than internet explorer is recomended for the internet as your've proberbly read in other posts. P/s, pays to do regular scans with Adaware, spybot just to be on the safe side but since using Firefox i've had no spyware for along time. |

| 358197 | 2005-05-24 23:56:00 | You had better install a firewall as well. With two "kids" file sharing and downloading music would you let us know when you get the first problem on your computer. We could even start a competition here to try and guess how soon your clean computer is compromised. |

Fortunately the kids don't do much ... just a couple of songs a week I guess. And I guess there is a bit of security hiding behind a 56kb dial up connection as far as someone externally taking control of the PC is concerned? |

On the other hand, if you were worried about how to protect yourself from nasties such as Spyware, Viruses, etc... Well, aside from Common sense of scanning it, try starting another thread about good 'housekeeping' practises. Just leave the illegal stuff out please. Chill. |
