2005-05-24 21:20:00 | Hi I have dug out my old windows 95 os pc. It will do as my granddaughters first pc,I have tried to get the OS to work, it does sometimes but I found that the IDE was naff and the BIOS (barrel type battery) was shot to hell. All I got in the end was the A prompt and amid all attempts to rectify, I couldnt restart the machine from DOS mode. I tried to by the Boot options but only C then A or C only and A then C. but no D or cd rom was in the setup.i have now changed the motherboard which now has the modern bios flat battery, and the memory and other boards from the win 95 are working ok so far. I get the windows 95 and the logo appearing on the screen now but it goes to this error message. while innitializing device IOS Windows protection error you need to restart PC. This error keeps on coming, could it be due to the different CPU or should I change the one from the old motherboard.By the way I now have the setup on (del) form the later modes of windows. p.s. the new motherboard is not brand new its from a win 98 version | steamman (82) | |
2005-05-24 21:49:00 | What kind of cpu / processor is in it?? How much memory is installed in it?? If you're talking about the CMOS battery (if this is dead), you can buy these batteries for about 3.50... Another thing u could have done (depending on how old the old motherboard was), is to see if there's a BIOS update which supports booting from cd. What brand/model is the new motherboard?? I take it, it has has the same CPU socket as the old?? For the processor/CPU?? or is it completely different / it takes a different kind of CPU?? Is this what the error says?? support.microsoft.com

And you wonder why it complains? That error usually means that an incorrect driver has been detected. In your case probably every driver. You need to reformat/reinstall Windows 95, and all the correct drivers for that newer motherboard. |

2005-05-24 22:06:00 | Drivers could be an issue if you have changed motherboard, it's best to reinstall, especially if there is nothing useful on the machine, I know I've had problems changing motherboards with existing OS's with incorrect driver loading, especially if it is actually making it ti the windows screen edit *snap Godfather beat me to it, need to step up to two fingered typing*

2005-05-24 22:12:00 | start up with a win98 boot floppy and take the 'start with cdrom support' optoin......then have your 95cd ready.....then at the A: prompt type in c: then tap enter then type in cd windows then tap enter then type in ren win.com win.old then tap enter then type in e: and tap enter (or whichever drive letter corresponds to your cdrom drive possibley d: ?.....) anyway.......then type in setup and tap enter and you'll be on your way to doin a 'repair' install of win95 which will leave the existing system in place but repair it ............LUCK

2005-05-24 22:13:00 | THIS method should allow the drivers to be replaced and you'll be able to get back to windows............where you may find that you have more work to do with drivers.......... :).......once you get to windows check your device manager for driver errors/probs etc | drcspy (146) | |
2005-05-24 23:34:00 | If your CPU speed is over 350Mhz, then you need a patch to correct, AMDK6UPD.EXE If your Win95 is first edition, then you cannot do anything. It is explained by Microsoft here (www.microsoft.com) The interesting thing is how to get it on the Windows system. I recall we used to change the multiplier links to slow the CPU down.

2005-05-26 09:40:00 | If the new processor is an AMD that is faster than 350MHz you need to install the file AMDK6UPD.EXE as suggested by phoenix. To do this you need to change the jumpers on the motherboard. Once that is done Win 95 should run, you then install the patch. shut down the computer set the speed back to the original setting and you should be right. | lark (1313) | |
