| 357866 | 2005-05-23 23:25:00 | We have recently bought a new computer (second hand actually). It came with Windows XP Professional loaded. It appears that any programme that acceess the net causes the computer to hang from a few to 30 seconds. We have had problems with Thunderbird, Opera, AVG, Zone Alarm, Adobe Photoshop Elements; and even Exporer. Skype just won't run even though it is just fine on a computer running ME. Outlook Express seems to be OK. Presumably one of our internet setting is wrong; but which one? We connect to the net via a router and broadband. We are having no problems with computers running ME; and all internet setting that I can find are the same on both ME and XP. We have turned off XP's finewall. Turning off Zone Alarm does not fix the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions? David |

David I'd reinstall XP. Too many programs with problems and not all of them related to the interent. You could spend ages troubleshooting it, checking for spyware/viruses and cleaning out all the clutter but it would actually be faster reinstalling and then you know you are beginning with a nice clean install. Of course, you did ensure the seller provided you with a legit copy of XP? |

| 357868 | 2005-06-07 01:21:00 | Fixed the problem! In the BIOS, I turned off hyper-threading, turned off the default over-clocking and reduced the voltage of the RAM to it's recommended value. I have not tried to find which one did the job. I understand that hyper-threading causes XP to hang with some Intel chipsets, but that my one (865PE) is not meant to be one of them. David |

Unless, u have a Prescott CPU, which can cause probs if u decided to install SP2, (and had spyware), then it may go round in crcles rebooting . BUT there is a patch from MS, which is meant to fix this, before u install SP2 . I have the same intel chipset as u, and this works fine with HT enabled . |
