357771 2005-05-23 07:49:00 Righto, when I boot up the computer will get as far as the Windows XP splash screen and then suddenly go into what appears to be standby mode (and won't wake up). I restart it and it makes it a bit further and then again goes into standby. After restarting maybe 10 or 15 (sometimes as few as 5, sometimes more, it varies) times the computer will boot fully and run pretty much as normal (sometimes it might out of the blue die again 5 or 10 minutes after sucessfully booting).

Any help or advice would be appreciated,

Thanks

357774 2005-05-25 05:22:00 A PC of that vintage is not new........these symptoms sound' to me very similar to what one might expect if the motherboard capacitors are in the process of dying..........open the case and take a look at the little cylindrical thingys on the main circuit board, these are capacitors theres heaps of them......make sure they all look FLAT on the tops.........if they are fine then that's one thing we have eliminated.......however there are also capacitors in the powersupply unit and they too can 'go' ..........if you have some dying caps on the board......then it maybe time to consider a new motherboard/cpu/ram combo.........yes caps CAN be replaced but it's not fun to do and probably not economic either....... drcspy (146)
357775 2005-05-25 05:44:00 is it possible to try it with another graphics card? Prescott (11)
357776 2005-05-25 06:04:00 Unfortunately I can't try with another card.

I'll open it up and look at the motherboard this evening and let you know.

357778 2005-05-25 14:09:00 Make a cuppa while trying to get the computer booted up.

When going go about all your business very quickly.

Your lucky the old rig will run XP Pro, try a downgrade to Win98, or buy a new PC.

357779 2005-05-26 05:15:00 The capacitors on the motherboard seem fine.

is the cpu overheating?

How would I find out if that's the case?

I can downgrade to Windows ME, would that really help?

or buy a new PC.

An option beyond my financial reach at this time ;)
