357636 2005-05-23 03:16:00 I need to delete everything on my laptops hard drive and re-install windows . I tried to install winXP but the system cannot handle it . It got part of the way through and stopped . Later i found out that my system req are not up to the min level . So now what i need to do is clean my drive again . I can't seem to get to F-Disk . I have tried to put the Win98 floppy in and boot from it but it will not do it . I have DLd'd win98 boot disk files and burned them to CD and tried to boot from it . No luck there either . When i turn on the computer it tried to start windows then realizes it is not fully installed . It then tries to finnish the install process and gets stuck .

I just need to erase the whole HD and start over but i can't get to that point . Any ideas?

P . S . It's a DELL laptop . I've heard they set things up a lil different .

357637 2005-05-23 03:36:00 f-disk is on the Win98 CD. Boot off either the CD or the floppy with CD-ROM support, then do the following:

D: ENTER (where X is your CD drive)
cd win98 ENTER
fdisk ENTER

That should allow you to start fdisk, unless your Win98 CD is not the usual one (ie a recovery disk or something).

Just realised you were having problems booting. This sounds like you aren't burning a boot sector to your CD/floppy. The easiest way to get a boot disk is to make one on another Win98 PC. Get a blank floppy, go to control panel>>add remove programs, and there should be a "create boot disk" option in there somewhere. Before you can boot this on the dell you need to make sure that you can boot from floppy, as it may be disabled for some reason. When it starts up, it should have a "hit key X to enter setup" or something similar. press this, and have a look around for a "boot order" option. Make sure that the floppy drive is set to boot before the CD drive. Then boot off your floppy.

357638 2005-05-23 03:58:00 You basically havent setup your PC in the BIOS to boot from the CD.

Put in the Win98 Setup CD and it should boot from it, if you've set this up in the BIOS.

From there, do as Bletch has said with fdisk :)

Cheers
