358109 2005-05-25 05:50:00 Boys boys boys !!!

What works for some, dont work for all.

OK .. now what do I do .. the pings dont work .. the local area icon on the system tray says ** a network cable is unplugged ** .. but its not unplugged.

The cable has patch cable printed on it and not crossover cable .. is that important ?

OOOO and the PC is now showing an error when starting up, showing that WDMIUTIL.DLL is missing.

358110 2005-05-25 06:11:00 A "Patch" cable usually won't be a crossover. :)

A plug-plug cable often has red boots on the plugs if it's a crossover. Otherwise, hold the two plugs side by side, cable to the bottom, and latches away from you. You can see the coloured wires inside. The contacts are numbered 1-8 (left-right). A crossover will have 1&2 crossed to 3&6 and 3&6 crossed to 1&2. These are the only two pairs which matter. A plain "straight" cable

If you've got a plug-socket cable you'll need to check it somehow. It might be just an "extension cord" rather than a crossover adapter.

Consider buying a commercially made crossover cable. They're not too expensive.

www.dll-files.com

Copy it to c:/windows/system folder.

358113 2005-05-29 02:45:00 :badpc: OK now . . . . . We have bought a new crossover cable . . and also have had given to us a hub .

We are still faced with the same problem though, which seems to be the one we have to get over before anything happens . . this is the fact that the lappy even though we now have a new crossover cable is still showing that the LAN network cable is unplugged . . and it aint . . I assure you it is plugged in . . the lappy doesnt go ding when we plug it in either . . . . the PC (running ME) appears to be set up right and is raring to go . . the lights are on on the back of the hard drive and on the hub . But the lappy isnt showing anywhere . .

What say ye ?????

358114 2005-05-29 02:52:00 A crossover cable and a hub might not be a good mix . ;)

Computers should have straight "patch" cables to connect to a hub There may be one socket on the hub marked as "Uplink" or "X" (or with a slide switch) . Using that with a crossover cable will "algebraicly" correct back to a straight connection .

A less likely possibilty: to save power, the laptop ethernet interface might be disabled in the BIOS .

358115 2005-05-29 03:19:00 If u have a ethernet hub, the crossover isnt needed .

Just plug the cable as is, from the networked pc into a spare port on the hub .

DON'T use the crossover and the hub, it wont work .

A hub saves u connecting a crossover cable .

358116 2005-05-29 03:32:00 If you have a genuine crossover cable the hub isn't needed . ;)

It will work if there is a port on the hub which is either a dedicated Uplink port, or switchable to crossover mode .

The lights on the hub could be confidence builders . It might be simplest to just use the crossover cable between the two computers .

358117 2005-05-29 04:34:00 Ive looked in the BIOS . . it appears the network card is enabled .
Bit difficult that . . cos I looked at everything relating to networking . .

There was 3 settings . . wake up on LAN . . flash over LAN and inter networking option ROM all enabled .

I am not using the hub and the crossover cables together . . I have tried the crossover cable alone and the hub with its own cables . . no luck .

Its this bloody lappy . . have no problems with anything else . . the LAN connection is still showing the network cable is unplugged .

I dont know about ethernet . . does everything have to be ethernet ??

It might be an idea to try disabling the "network ROM ". That is most likely just to provide the code needed to load the Os from a server ... and although it "shouldn't" affect anything, (depending on the boot device order) you don't need that.

Is the network interface shown as working in the Hardware/Device Manager ?

You could try making it reinstall the driver. It must "be" there, to be reporting that the cable is unplugged.

You can buy a USB network cable. But Ethernet is the standard and it usually works. :D
