357792 2005-06-02 06:40:00 Seems like a good solution - I assume the drive would just show as another drive, (eg E:) and I could just access it normally and copy stuff out? Loopy (3187)
357793 2005-06-02 07:21:00 yes,
rip open your case when your pc is turned off and unpluged, you might want to ground your self if you feel the need. disconnect the IDE cables from the mother board and the hard drive, take them and put them in your new pc. on the new pc's motherboard you will see that there is an secondary ide port, put the cable in there, and plug in your hard drive and put it in the bay, and screw it in and plug in the little power plug from the psu to the hard drive too. boot up, and you may need to go in the bios and set that hard drive to slave/secondary.
hopefully ive explained that right :)

357794 2005-06-03 05:01:00 Do I need to mess around with jumpers at all? Loopy (3187)
357795 2005-06-03 05:15:00 If the secondary IDE socket in the other machine is free, that procedure should work without changes. (You shouldn't tell the BIOS that disk is slave ... it will probbaly be Master on the secondary IDE bus. That's perfectly OK: the OS on the primary master will boot as normal).

If you haven't got a free IDE bus, you might have to do some jumpers. :) It's not all that terrible ...

357796 2005-06-03 05:29:00 Alright, cheers Loopy (3187)
357797 2005-06-03 07:22:00 Hi Loopy
Have you tried booting into Safe Mode? As soon as the first POST screen disappears, start tapping the F8 key. A menu should appear. Choose Safe Mode. Will it boot into Safe Mode and stay on for a while?

Cheers

PS: I ran XP on a PII 350 for a while until I built a new system. It ran ok. PIII would be pure luxury :)

357798 2005-06-04 03:25:00 Nah, Safe Mode had the same trouble.

I have my new comp now - it has two hard drives - am I right in thinking that I should just put my old one in the place of the second one (D drive), take the stuff off, and then put the second one back? Just want to be sure.

357799 2005-06-04 03:37:00 If it has a second disk there already, just change the jumpers on your "bad" disk to be the same as on that second disk. That makes life much simpler. ;) Graham L (2)
