358089 2005-05-24 23:27:00 Okay:
To find a PC's IP Address, do the following:
Click Start
--> Run
Now, for WinXP, type:
cmd
Otherwise, for Win9x, type:
command
Now, type:
ipconfig /all

This will list the IP Address for the PC you're sitting at.

Lets start from the beginning!
Firstly, unplug the cable, just in case there is a temporary conflict of IP's.
*You want the laptop, running WinXP, to be the "host/server/gateway".
So, if by chance you can setup an internet connection (even a fake one) do so, then enable Internet Connection Sharing. This will automatically do the following step.
If you cant, then setup the Laptop's Network connection like so:
IP Address = 192.168.0.1
Subnet = 255.255.255.0
Gateway = 192.168.0.1
DNS 1 = 192.168.0.1
DNS 2 = 202.27.184.3

Now, run over to your "client" PC, running WinME, and set the Network connection like so:
IP Address = 192.168.0.2
Subnet = 255.255.255.0
Gateway = 192.168.0.1
DNS 1 = 192.168.0.1
DNS 2 = 202.27.184.3

Now, shut down the WinME PC.
Plug in the Cable.
Make sure the WinXP box is turned on.
Turn on the WinME PC.
When both are on, sit down at the WinXP Laptop and:
Click Start
--> run
cmd
Now, type:
ping 192.168.0.2
Post back the results

Also, then sit down at the WinME PC and Click Start
--> Run
Now, type:
command
Then type:
ping 192.168.0.1
Again, post the results

Regards

Chill.

358090 2005-05-24 23:28:00 BTW - Just for the record, if it asks about DHCP, you DONT want it ;)
Just re-reading the previous post, makes me think DHCP was playing a part in the fun... No good :p

358091 2005-05-24 23:40:00 On XP . Go into My network places .

View network connections . Highlight Local area connection/properties . Then TCP/IP . .

Select use the following ip address . 192 . 168 . 0 . 2 in ip address it shouldnt be 127 . 0 . 0 . 1 this is the local ip and gets u NOWHERE .

(MOST people leave these on obtain an ip automatically) . The ONLY prob with this is, everytime u reboot (if u do), they (The ip addresses/es change, and both or more PC's lose their connections between each other) .

Having this on Use the following ip will keep the PC/s at that IP address .

Subnet under this should be 255 . 255 . 255 . 0

And default gateway SHOULD be 192 . 168 . 0 . 1 (this will point to the ME PC) .

And preferred DNS SHOULD be 192 . 168 . 0 . 1 (or the Primary DNS of your ISP), so XP can actually get onto the Net . Secondary DNS can be left blank, or if u know what the secondary DNS server ip is (from your ISP), type it in Alternate DNS server .

On ME . (I've never used ME), go into the dialup (If youre on dial-up), and tick ICS (Internet connection sharing) . This should tell windows you're sharing a net connection, and Windows SHOULD hopefully automatically assign it 192 . 168 . 0 . 1, as it'll be the host PC .

And firewalls, what firewall did u disable on XP and ME??? If you're going to let BOTH PC's on the Net, then it is a good idea to have some kind of firewall installed somewhere . And depending on what the firewall is, you'll have to configure it to allow XP to share a folder with ME (if you want to share files) .

And also configure the firewall on ME (If you have one), so XP can get on the net .

358092 2005-05-24 23:41:00 Chilling . . ** Make sure the WinXP box is turned on . ** by box do you mean to ensure the lappy is turned on ??

I dunno what DHCP is :nerd:

I need to know what you mean by box before I take the steps you say ?

and thankkkkkkkkkkkkkksssssssssssssssssssss !!

358093 2005-05-24 23:46:00 On ME. (I've never used ME), go into the dialup (If youre on dial-up), and tick ICS (Internet connection sharing). This should tell windows you're sharing a net connection, and Windows SHOULD hopefully automatically assign it 192.168.0.1, as it'll be the host PC.

Speedy ... Im not wanting the PC to be the host .. it has to be the lappy cos we take it away .. Im told if we use the PC as the host it messes things up when we take the lappy away and try to connect.

Firewalls .. ive only disabled the firewall on XP .. havent touched the one on ME yet
whats the diff tween a firewall and a virus protector ?

358094 2005-05-24 23:55:00 OK oops in that case reverse what I said everything I said for 192.168.0.2 put it on ME NOT XP...ICS should be enabled on XP.. So ME can get on the net.

Then it SHOULD work...I spose if u go thru my network connections on ME (whatever option it has, it'll give u similar options like XP??

The following would be done on ME.

Select use the following ip address. 192.168.0.2.

Having this on Use the following ip will keep the PC/s at that IP address.

Subnet under this should be 255.255.255.0

And default gateway SHOULD be 192.168.0.1 (this will point to the XP PC).

And preferred DNS SHOULD be 192.168.0.1 (or the Primary DNS of your ISP), so ME can actually get onto the Net. Secondary DNS can be left blank, or if u know what the secondary DNS server ip is (from your ISP), type it in Alternate DNS server.

The following would be on XP.

On XP, go into the dialup (If youre on dial-up), and tick ICS (Internet connection sharing). This should tell windows you're sharing a net connection, and Windows SHOULD hopefully automatically assign it 192.168.0.1, as it'll be the host PC.

An antivirus program doesnt protect u from hackers etc on the net. Its only for viruses. If you had something like Norton Internet Security, which includes an antivirus, then you would have both (antivirus and a firewall program). An antivirus program by itself, isnt a firewall.

358095 2005-05-25 00:05:00 Turn off firewalls on both computers. They can cause problems. Turn them back on and configure them after you get both computers talking to each other/connected.

P/s, make sure that xp's built in firewall is turned off too.

P/ss,
Make sure to turn them back on when you get the network connected or if you give up in frustration and want to go onto the internet. ;)

358096 2005-05-25 00:33:00 I am using Chillings post #11 to set it up .. its nice and clear .. I have the lappy done to where ive done the ip stuff .. then gone to the PC to do this ..

Now, run over to your "client" PC, running WinME, and set the Network connection like so:
IP Address = 192.168.0.2
Subnet = 255.255.255.0
Gateway = 192.168.0.1
DNS 1 = 192.168.0.1
DNS 2 = 202.27.184.3

Of course ME is different .. I can enter the ip .. subnet and gateway .. but under DNS config .. i have clicked enable DNS .. it wants a HOST name .. and maybe a DOMAIN name ... then it has DNS servers search order ,, and spaces with the stops in .. under that is Domain Suffix Search Order with no stops .. are these two areas where I put the DNS numbers ???
Lovelee (6586)
358097 2005-05-25 01:11:00 Ah ok, thats similar to 98/98 SE.

The DNS server search order, you can type in 192.168.0.1 or the ip addresses of your ISP.

The host name does it want letters or numbers?? If numbers try 192.168.0.1 as the host.

358098 2005-05-25 01:37:00 OK .. Ive entered all .. turned off comps .. plugged in plug ( I assume it doesnt matter which comp the crossover/added bit is)

Ive pinged from lappy 192.168.0.2
packets sent 4 recieved none lost 4

Ive pinged from PC 192.168.0.1
says destination host unreachable

all packets lost :(
