358030 2005-05-27 06:32:00 That DEC "Tulip" is a fairly old design. The Linux developers had troubles with it. It might be one of those odd ones which were "NE2000" and needed to be set at boot time. You might be getting that done at power up "cold start", but with an error because it's not ready in time for the system; then it works perfectly after a reset.

I's be inclined to buy a modern card. They aren't expensive.

358031 2005-05-27 08:22:00 Have you tried the card in another PCI slot?
When the card is working, does it show what resources it is using?

Yes the resources it shows are:

I/O Range E800-E87F
Mem Range DFFEFCOO- DFFEFFFF
IRQ 17

No conflicts.

I think you maybe right, I might pop down to DSE tomorrow and grab a new network card. Hopefully this will fix the problem...

Thanks everyone for your help/suggestions/links....

When the card is not working, have a look to see if any other device is using these resources instead.

358033 2005-05-27 11:50:00 Just looking at the DSE website at network cards and have found this card...

www.dse.co.nz

It features USB and Firewire as well as Ethernet connections... I am looking at eventually getting a Firewire MAudio Soundcard and would have to eventually get a firewire card...

Just wondering if my Motherboard (Soltek SL-KT400-C/KT400-A4C) is compatible or i I will have any issues...???

And is geting a card that is GigaBit Ethernet capable for a home network / router connection a waste of time?

At the moment I will be just connecting my Router via ethernet to my PC.

Thanks again for the help.

358034 2005-05-28 03:20:00 Giganet is probably overkill ... but I suppose having it available won't hurt. That looks like a pretty classy card ... but if you already have USB2.0 a $15 10/100 Ethernet card will do, unless you particularly want Firewire. Even then if you have empty slots a separate card to provide FW might be cheaper.

I had a look at the notes on the Linux driver for the DEC Tulip chipset this morning. It's apparently a real mess ... many cards use it, relying on flakey and misunderstood documentation. The comments are not kind. ;)
