357726 2005-05-23 22:10:00 I really feel like screaming at them on the phone, but i got to remember that its not their fault that they're idiots bound by idiotic rules working for idiotic managers

So while were on the topic, can some people talk about their hard drive posting experiances ?

How much packaging did you use ?

What postal options did you go with ?

any other bad experiances or suggestions for this kind of thing ?

357727 2005-05-23 22:16:00 use one of those plastic shell cases that hdd's often come in.......also use plenty of STIFF cardboard......foam plastic.....bubble wrap etc etc.....if you RMA the drive make sure you have it correctly packed or else whomever you RMA it to may very well deny your warranty return because of insufficient packaging........check with them what they require...... drcspy (146)
357728 2005-05-23 22:39:00 I hate to be insensitive but... but why in God's name would you send a hard drive via POST. Take the drive back to Super Cheap and get it replaced... your 1st mistake was sending in the post... surely you were aware of the risks that this involved... using the excuse that it was done before doesn't mean that something bad won't happen.

I do feel for your loss but the truth is the stuff up was yours when you put the drive in post in the 1st place.

cheers

357729 2005-05-23 23:19:00 errrr........surely what other way is there to send a drive ?.......hand delivery ?......could be more expensive than the cost of the harddrive.......? drcspy (146)
357730 2005-05-24 00:58:00 By the very nature of it's construction a hard drive is very susceptible to damage by excessive or sudden movement. The head reader is so close to the platter (unlike a notebook's drive which moves off the disk) that any jolting is almost certain to kill the drive or at best make portions of it unreadable.

Sending a drive via post is just an announcement saying "kill me"

357731 2005-05-24 01:11:00 chiefnz, if one cannot send well packed items labelled fragile through the postal service and have them arrive at the other end of their journey in working order, then I can't see the point of the service at all. If this is not a reasonable expectation then NZ Post should be shut down and someone else allowed to do the job. zqwerty (97)

Greg do you not know that the heads will be docked?

They are not that fragile, and if the Postal Service was not just a rabble running under a corporate banner like Telescam then why should one not be able to send fragile items through the post? This is ridiculous.

357733 2005-05-24 01:46:00 A better title would be: "Hard Drive dead". You don't know that NZ Post damaged it. You sent it by post. It doesn't work. "Correlation is not causation."

It sounds as if the drive was properly packaged, so shock is unlikely to damage the disk to the point that it gives no response. The heads are parked (by a spring) over a "landing zone" (which the heads actually touch when the drive stops in normal use), and the platters are stationary. So the data areas aren't going to be damaged.

If the spindle motor doesn't run, the problem is most likely to be in the electronics board. I doubt if an X-ray scanner would do that much damage, and I suspect NZ Post aren't scanning all parcels for bombs. Yet. ;)

I very much doubt that couriers are any more careful of the goods than NZ Post. Their cargo handlers are under pressure to fill containers quickly. Who believes that parcels never "fly" in normal handling?

I think your best approach would be a warranty claim.

357734 2005-05-24 01:57:00 Most people don't realise there are 2 NZPost options. NZPost Packet Post and NZ Post Courier Post.
I find the first one to be great and any hassles they always pay out.
Couriers are no different. I've seen some pretty squashed destroyed items that have come through couriers.
I don't now about other makes but read the label on Seagates drives. Shock in excess of 350g. Thats quite a drop.
I think the mistake was not in sending it through the mail but buying it from SuperCheap.

357735 2005-05-24 02:24:00 Most people don't realise there are 2 NZPost options . NZPost Packet Post and NZ Post Courier Post . Most of the NZ Post parcels are delivered by the same NZ Post couriers whether they go by packet post or courier post as the posties don't have room on their bikes or in their bags to carry them .

If the parcel/packet is packed properly with lots of padding it should survive a bit of rough treatment unless abused . Accidents can and do happen though, as, like Graham says, they do work very fast .
