358147 2005-05-24 16:49:00 A friend of mine has a laptop with a wireless network adapter/port. She also has her main home desktop PC (HP Pavilion 521A.. I think) Her internet connection is a 256 Jetstream connetion via a Billion modem/router.

Now she has 2 kids and there is constant competition as to who is using the PC. What has happened now is that the kids have started using her T3G adapter card on the laptop. She does not want this as the T3G plane only has a 200MB on it per month and she uses it strictly for work and e-mail only.

I have suggested that a wireless setup may be the answer to avoid the use of her T3g card. She doesn't want cables all over the place either.

My question is simpe... Can she just purchase a wireless access point along with wireless network card for PC and connect the access point staight to the router/modem or will she need to buy a wireless router?

cheers

358148 2005-05-24 23:14:00 Yes, buy an access point, plug into modem/router as long as there is a spare plug and setup wireless network. This way the PC doesn't have to be on for internet access. Or you could just get a wireless NIC for the PC and have wireless running in ad-hoc mode but this means the PC has to be on for internet access as you would share the PC internet connection. First option is the best.

358150 2005-05-25 04:51:00 Well I have been looking around for some wireless access points that I may consider buying. Problem is... well they are a bit pricey... not unexpected I must say. Just a few things I want to get cleared up please...

1) Will I notice a significant difference between the 100Mbps wired connection I have now and a 54Mbps wireless connection. I mean is it really that much slower?

2) Conversely would there be any significant difference between the 108Mbps wireless connection and the wired 100Mbps connection.

If the answer is NO, then I would settle for a 54Mbps wireless network. I want to buy trusted brand name equipment to ensure as far as possible that the network will run fine.

Does anyone have any suggestions... I've been looking at D-Link products quite a bit... are there any other good trusted name brands out there worth investigating?

cheers

358151 2005-05-25 04:57:00 your wireless card is way faster then any broadband connection.
You will only see a difference if you are networking the computers and transfering big files
Even a B card will be ample for the internet
