357957 2005-05-24 06:23:00 Hi,

I have a question or two about the speed of the dvd discs bought from Dicksmith electronics .

I am referring to the 8x speed DSE Dvd dics that cost about $14 . 98, which you get in a pack of 10 . I am curious though, about the actual speed of these dics if they are REALLY are 4x speed NOT 8x speed as intended . ?

How do I come to that conclusion?

Well, I tried a small sample of DVD utilities to help me out for sure;

*DVD identifier
*Nero speed
*CD Check

just to name a few . All these come up trumps as 4x speed . I even used Nero burn (enterprise edition) if that means a great deal, and I couldn't choose which speed to burn using these dics . The only options available are 2x , 4x;
as using other 8x speed Dics, I have the option to use 2, 4, 8 speed .

The 8x speed dics which I have used tested and used in the past;
TDK
Imation

I am curious to know if anyone else has also discovered this, and whether this is any big deal or correct me on this .

Do I have a case to make against DSE if this is true . ?

Regards
Claud

357958 2005-05-24 06:30:00 The second question would be why are you paying so much for the media in the first place? Metla (12)
357959 2005-05-24 06:34:00 Do I have a case to make against DSE if this is true.?Not really. Some drives/burners like some brands and not others. Some disks may burn well at 8x on one burner, but only at 2x or 4x on another. I used to have some cheap CDs that wouldn't go any higher than 16x on one burner, but on my other burner they burned quite comfortably at 40x (the burner's maximum). Maybe you've just found a brand/type that your burner doesn't really like - it happens.

357961 2005-05-24 08:10:00 They wouldn't even work in my burner. I had no problems with their 4x discs (rebranded Imations) but these kept throwing up error messages and refusing to work. :groan: 4bes (2848)

If you can tell me where I can find blank DVD dics at 8X speed that are cheaper than the above price, I would be interested.

Hi Mike,

Would it be funny if the DVD writer happens to be their own? I suppose this is what I get for buying cheap hardware I guess....

Hi, I have tried only TDK, Imation . The only problem though in doing this, is that there still doesn't seem to be a wide variety yet for blank DVD dics that run at 8x speed .

Not many that I don't know of yet . Many blank DVDs come in large packages, when I only want to at least try one .

Overall, if the outcome of brands produce different results with the use of different media products, then shouldn't the above DVD utensils figure this out in the first place or deemed to be a waste of time in the end??

And THANKS heaps for all your replys and to those who still would like to add their bit as of 7:33pm until end of time.

Cheers
