Not necessarilly, if it's a software issue, removing the trigger (a phone call) will simply have the same result either way. All possibilities need to be investigated to narrow down the source to a point where it can be found.

has taken a bit, but now back in "sunny" southland. Was a wee bit overwhelmed by all the replies, and in the end decided to follow a mixture of both.

Computer was shiftewd around the house to eliminate the need for the phone extension cord anb all phones where unplugged bar one using a known (good filter).
That helped, and have now slowly added back all the other phones (and filters) and it's working fine. So maybe it was the extension cord? Have had no problem since.

One of the replies however have me wondering though <Murray P>. It's all working fine... I'm sitting here now, but I cannot ping the modem???

Thanks for all the help.

Phone extension cords are killers for adsl. They are not twisted pairs, their impedance is wrong, and they are highly susceptible to interference.

If you need to operate away from a phone socket, get an new socket installed, or have an extension lead made up using CAT5E or CAT6 network cable, it will work just fine.

Cheers

Do extension cords have the same effect on dial-up connections?

Cheers.
