Say it ain't so!

Microsoft have the resources to test their desktop and server OS's on numerous pc configurations, probably far more than the Linux distro development teams. Sometimes linux distro's take a distinct dislike to certain pc configurations. My suggestion would be to get hold of a Linux live cd which will get Linux running in your server without any partitioning involved. Try Simply Mepis or Knoppix as these have good hardware detection routines. You can download them or buy them off Trademe. Having established that all is well, partition your harddrive and away you go... maybe...

358533 2005-05-27 14:58:00 I'll put in a vote for Mepis. You can run it as a live CD and thus not effect your HDD. If you like it, it has a program that will then install it to your HDD. It will sort out any partitioning issues with absolute respect for exsisting data.

Very tidy

VERY Tidy

358535 2005-05-27 15:27:00 Got the CD ok then Chris, you like? I did indeed get it, and Thanks for that Murray! Did i like it? EXTREEMLY :D

It found all my hardware without problem. It deals with my nasty onboard video well, (FC3 would appear to freeze sometimes) has a very tidy install, excellant update and only 3 small things wrong.

1. Upon telling Mepis i'd prefer metric measurement, it displayed a German Log in screen. Everything else is still english though.

2. Evolution was not included, but took 10 minutes to download and install using Synaptic Package Manager. Nice updater!

3. This is my biggest worry... Real Player seems preassociated with everything it logically could be, despite all previous user settings, and even though its not actually installed
I Hate Real Player!

And thats all my complaints over the whole distro! Its been great!

I've been meaning to write a PF1 review, i supposed that was the "digest condenced" version................... :D

358536 2005-05-27 16:09:00 Hmmm, haven't come across the German language thingy.

I think there is a second disc you can get with more app's on it. Check out the site, it may be on subscription

RealPlayer is installed under Multimedia. Go into the Control Centre (either via the main menu or the wrench and screwdriver icon, top 2nd left to the K menu in the panel (if your using the default layout) > expand KDE Componets > File Associations.

Glad you like it

Yes, write the review
