358792 2005-05-27 01:21:00 Did u go into the BIOS and put whatever ide connection its on to AUTO??

The BIOS has to know its there, before windows does.

You didnt put the dvd burner on the same IDE connection as a hard drive did you? And remember to put the jumper on the back of the burner, to either Master or slave.

And what kind of computer have you got? What version of Windows?

358793 2005-05-27 06:10:00 The jumpers are all in the right place. It is not on the same IDE plug as my hard drives and my BIOS is set to detect it automatically.

Win XP home sp 1a
PII 415 Mhz SKT 370
512 ram
2X 40gb maxtor HDD

358794 2005-05-27 06:21:00 Does the dvd appear when u boot? On the post screen? Speedy Gonzales (78)
358795 2005-05-27 06:24:00 no the DVD writer does not appear and neither do my 2 harddrives. the computer will not boot or anything. hoppo_8 (8203)
358796 2005-05-27 06:35:00 Something is definitely wrong then.

Its most probably the power supply, if its dead, and doesnt boot at all.

Or make sure the power connections from the power supply have been plugged into the dvd and hdd's.

I would try another power supply or try it in another power point.

358797 2005-05-27 06:57:00 Check that the IDE cable is correctly aligned. Pin on the drives (nearest the power connector) must go to pin on the motherboard.

This is usually enforced by a key on the side of each plug (and sometimes a missing header and a matching plugged hole in the socket).

I have seen cables with a connector put on wrongly, so the key is on the wrong side. Some drives don't have a housing, so there's nothing make the key work.

This cable flip is usually indicated by the disk activity light going on immediatelly the power is on, and staying on. It will stop the system booting, very effectively.
