358730 2005-05-26 11:38:00 There are 20 pins and 24 pins PSU connectors . What are their differences? I can plug in a 20 pins PSU (connector) to a 24 pin Socket in the Motherboard and everthing still works fine .

Which is newer, 20 pins or 24 pins?

Cheers

358731 2005-05-26 11:54:00 24 pins are the newer format, Though I am yet to see a psu with that size plug on it, Just use the 20 pin plug, they are designed to accept them And the article I read on them the other day claimed the 20-to-24 pin converter was a bad idea.

That said, I have a couple of older (3 or 4 years old) compaq's with 24-pin plugs on em....

358732 2005-05-26 13:04:00 A 24pin PSU may provide more stable power to your new A64 or LGA775 motherboard. Some boards like the DFI A64s do need a 24pin PSU or they will be unstable. With a 24pin PSU you should also get dual 12v rails and PCI-E plugs which may make it worthwhile. vapo (5203)
358733 2005-05-27 02:11:00 Well my A8N has a 24pin connector. I have my 20 pin PSU plugged in without any adaptors. Its fine.

I did it the other way round too, a friend has a 24pin PSU (new) and a 20 pin board. He didn't have an adaptor either so I connected it and its been running fine for several months now.

What article was it Metla? Why did it say it was a bad idea?

It depends I think a lot on what hardware you have in the PC. Mines minimal so its not a problem.

358734 2005-05-27 03:33:00 What about the PSU with that standard ATX power connector and an extra 4 pin plug that connects about 10cm away from the first on the motherboard? apparition (3207)

What about it? If your board has the connector for it, you need to use it, if it doesn't you tuck it out of the way and ignore it.

Yeah 24pin PSU -> 20pin adapter -> 20pin motherboard is ok
20pin PSU -> 24pin motherboard seems to work ok with some boards and if you line up the rails properly
20pin PSU -> 24pin adaptor -> 24pin motherboard does not seem to work ok?
