358666 2005-05-26 05:52:00 hi Guys,

I am looking at a new PC - I had in my mind what I believed would have been a bit of a hum dinger - Athlon 64 3000+, 1 gig ram, 160 gig hardrive etc and the Graphics card would be a Radeon X800 pro (AGP)

after getting a few quotes from some PC shops I have found that they have been quoting based on the graphics card being PCI-E. I used to know what all the computer jargon meant but have been out of the game for a while.

Please help :help: - what does PCI-E mean? will a ATi Radeon X800 256M PCI-E Bravo Edition do the same job as the X800 pro AGP? someone said that the PCI-E is the way of the future - is this true?

Or should I go and crawl under the rock I came out from?? hahaha

358667 2005-05-26 05:55:00 PCI-E is the new format and most definitly what you should be getting on a new comp, However there are no real world benifits over AGP.It comes down to marketing. Metla (12)
358668 2005-05-26 06:00:00 PCI-E is the way of the future but not necessarily the way of the present. Current PCI-E cards are no faster or better than their AGP equivalent.
OF course if you do go PCI-E then that also opens the door to SLI, if your motherboard supports it.

If you are buying a new videocard go PCI-E, if you plan to keep your current videocard then go AGP.

358669 2005-05-26 06:07:00 very nice!

what is SLI ?

358670 2005-05-26 06:13:00 SLI is a way of linking 2 video cards (have to be identical) to run as one combining their power, its great for gaming  Overdrive_5000 (4950)

SLI (Scalable Link Interface) is a technology that allows you to run 2 videocards to power one monitor, increasing performance by up to 2x

But in reality about < 30% in games.

Yes, that's what by up to 2x means.

For a proper review.

And remember this always happens. Once people were running around saying nah, don't get a board with PCI, its the new fangled thing, ISA is fine.
And nah, don't get Windows, DOS is fine. Etc.

PCI-E is it. AGP is on the way out with CRT monitors and horse drawn carriages.
