359458 2005-05-29 00:39:00 Can installing the wrong ram blow the motherboard &/or cpu?
I tried some additional ram in a Win98 machine, it didn't boot with it, I removed it, and now it won't boot at all.

359459 2005-05-29 00:51:00 How much ram was in it before u put the extra ram in ?

Depending on how much ram, you were trying to put on the mobo, and what brand/model the mobo is, it might have been more than what the mobo can handle.

Try pulling the CMOS battery out for a minute, then putting it back in.

computer originally had 128 Mb ram in two separate sticks.
I added another 64Mb.
Type of motherboard???? No idea how to tell.
There is a sticker with Xcell 2000 on it, sooo that must be it.

359461 2005-05-29 03:04:00 sounds likr pcchips mobo.

odds are you have bumped something else. check for loose leads. take out one of the ram sticks and try it with just one. note- if its got onboard video you usually need to have a stick of ram in the first slot otherwise it will not boot.

359462 2005-05-29 03:30:00 Had the same problem. Wouldn't boot with an extra ram stick - was a different type. Took it out - still no go - took the original one out - other one back in, and all OK. Seems to have buggared up the orignal one.

359463 2005-05-29 19:27:00 I've had similar problems before.. I just made sure that the original ram was re-inseterted properly.. sometimes ram is really sensitive i think. you might have to take it out, make sure no dust is on it, and slide it back in. make sure it is in perfectly too... i tried it a few times and eventually it booted again.. good luck! bizzack (7739)
359464 2005-05-29 19:28:00 oh, and i know it sounds funny.. but i also had to make sure that the sticks were in their original ports.. like i swapped them around again so that they would work.. I dont know why, but it wouldnt boot otherwise... good luck! bizzack (7739)
