358896 2005-05-27 11:09:00 I'm trying to get ZA and Internet Connection Sharing(ICS)working, I've read a few threads on this forum and elsewhere, including the ZA help guide and no one seems to have much luck .

I've got ZA Pro 5 . 5 . on the gateway, nothing on the client, I have enabled ICS on ZA and allowed DNS and DCHP .

Internet Connection Sharing works fine when ZA is disabled, so its a ZA problem . Running a broadband external modem .

Running it on WinZP SP2 . I see its a bit of a problem from various sites, has anyone overcome this one and can give me a few tips what to try next, I bet it's simple .

Cheers

358897 2005-05-27 11:39:00 Hi Ferg
I used to have a very similar set-up with ADSL ICS on XP PC running ZA (holy cow!- 5 acronyms in 7 words!). Like your issue, my client PC could never ever get through without first disabling ZA on the gateway PC - it was very frustrating no matter what settings you changed (I was using a PCI ADSL modem). In the end I bought a router (which you have), connected my PC's & router to a hub/switch (might be difficult if your modem connects to the PC via USB), disabled DHCP, used fixed IP addresses with the router IP address as the gateway, added each PC & router into the other's trusted zone in ZA - and everything has been 'sweet as' ever since. I think the issue is the DHCP (i.e. floating IP addresses?, despite what their help files say) whereas ZA works fine with fixed IP addresses. Sorry this doesn't help your current predicament but may show you a way out...

358898 2005-05-27 11:44:00 Thanks for the advice, I'd like to do it the poor peoples way if I can without spending the extra $$$ that could go on something useful like beer, its my old PC I'm trying to connect,

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll see what else the brains trust that is PressF1 can come up with!

358899 2005-05-27 15:10:00 I have to agree with Andrew . An external ehternet ADSL router is the way to go . More secure, less issues with networking without the added baggage of MS ICS which can be a curse at times, uses less CPU cycles as well .

You can pick up some pretty cheap routers these days . You might even get a few bucks for your PCI modem to offset some of the cost . If you have an old defunct computer lying around you can use a router/firewall configured OS to make your own . Just swap the PCI modem in with a couple of network cards and bingo

358900 2005-05-27 20:43:00 let me suggest you forget about microsofts infamous ICS and goto www.analogx.com look thru their downloads and find 'proxy' it's FAR easier to setup/run/configure than ICS anyday at all and it works with zonealarm free so it should work with pro.......just ensuere that under 'firewall/zones' you add the ip of the other pc etc.......sooooo simple drcspy (146)
358901 2005-05-27 21:53:00 Too easy Drcspy! :D Worked a treat thanks, I had been playing with ZA for a couple of hours, and nothing worked, but Analogx waltzed right past it. Thanks a lot.

So now I'm off to spend the money I saved on beer.....mmmmmm beer.

358902 2005-05-27 22:07:00 If u were using the free ZA (not registered), I dont think it supports ICS, until u register it. Speedy Gonzales (78)

Is it still true that you can lower the security down to medium and ICS will then work in the ZA free version?

Apparently it used to but not sure if that is the case now .

358904 2005-05-27 23:01:00 I'm using ZA Pro which is s'posed to be ICS compatible, but couldn't get it working despite following the un-detailed help instructions. I really like ZA but in this case had to admit defeat and have gove with the proxy, which was really simple. Ferg (2559)
358905 2005-05-27 23:11:00 Glad to hear it, Ferg, good on you.

I was hijacking your thread a bit but just wanted to find out about the option of lowering the security as I had no success in getting ICS working with ZA free recently. Was told later that it used to work with that trick but never got the chance to try it to see if it still applied.
