359361 2005-05-30 12:58:00 I also have a Rockwell (now Connexant) modem. Problem with them is they look for COM3 which often as not your computer wont find... so you will have no PCI serial controller installed either. It is all to do with which devices are using which COM ports and if neccesary remove one of the ports and restar your computer. It is all to do with the fact that on the older comps you cannot use COM1 and 3 together as they both use the same IRQ the same apples to COM2 and 4.
Here is some info I found... it may help.

Windows cannot support shared hardware interrupts. Since COM1 and COM3 (also COM2 and COM4) share the same interrupts, you cannot have one serial device installed on COM1 and the other device installed on COM3 (or one device on COM2 and another on COM4).

If you have an external modem, check that it is connected to a serial port. If you have an internal modem, check the switch setting (on the board) to ensure that it is assigned to the appropriate COM port.

Select the Set Fax Parameters option from the System menu to check that your specification of the COM port is correct. If you cannot start SuperVoice, use an editor to display the C:\SVPRO\DATA\SV1.INI file. There is a line under the section entitled [PICFAX1] that should appear as: COMPORT = n , where n = 1 to 4.

HOpe this helps

359362 2005-06-26 09:39:00 Just to close the gate on this.

thanks to the suggestions I had, It all came down to the pc being Ibm generic, I managed to get Mobo drivers etc, sorted the pci contoller issue and the Irq for the modem that was conflicting with the ethernet card.

The either net card drivers were sorted by installing the drivers for a new card without the card installed, booting up with the old card installed and finding on the net, the half dozen or so .dlls that were identified as missing by the "found new hardware" manager.

The card is highlighted with an exclamation mark in the device manager, but works!.

so again.... many thanks to ALL :D
