359902 2005-05-30 22:51:00 Ok, i feel that this is going to be a stupid question but i wouldn't ask if i knew.

Is a network hub and switch something that i can hook/network 3 computers to and connect to my phone line for the internet?.

I have zone alarm on two of my computers and i've had no end of trouble trying to get them to talk to each other. The only way is to turn off the firewalls.

Now that i've got another computer up and running, ( thanks for the screen Andrew  ), i need some way of connecting them all together. I want them all to have internet access. (Two of the computers are the kids computers and they love playing crazy golf, Bob the builder, Dora etc... :groan: )

This is the hub i was looking at....www.trademe.co.nz

Anyway, is this what i need?.
Thanks, Brian.

359903 2005-05-30 23:19:00 You can connect 3 or more pcs thru a hub, depending on how many ports the hub has.

If u have a crossover cable, this isn't needed. The hub would do the job.

Just give the 3 PC's different ip addresses, and make sure the workgroup is the same on all 3.

And depending on what version of XP you have (If u have XP)

You only need one pc with a modem connected to the phone line. And the other 2 plug into the back of the hub. And u access the net from the networked PC's thru the main PC's internet connection.

ZA if it isn't registered doesnt (I think support ICS - Internet connection sharing). Until u give it a serial #.

What's installed on each PC?? What version of Windows?

And whats the main PC got on it?? 98 SE? XP ?

359904 2005-05-30 23:41:00 The main computer, mine, is running xp home. The next computer, say number2, is win 98 and the other computer, number3 is running my copy of xp home on it for the time being (27 more days).
I only loaded my copy of XP home on number3 computer because i couldn't get win98 to load (kept saying corrupted files when trying to read the 98 disc).
I've just assembled computer3 out of bits i had laying around and needed an operating system on it to see if it was working ok. It is.
I think i'll have to remove my xp off number3 and load up another OS. Probably try and get win98se loaded again.

Now i'm thinking of away to connect them all together.
I think the hub's the way to do it but i'm all ears if someones got a better idea?

359905 2005-05-30 23:57:00 Well the hub is the only way, you're going to connect all 3 to each other and to the net, unless u use wireless, but then it may cost a bit more, to get the hardware, you need for wireless .

Yup 98 SE isn't the easiest OS to configure on a network . If it isnt the main PC . There's quite a bit to configure on 98 SE (If its one of the networked PC's) .

I would if u wanted to make 98 SE (the 2nd PC), the main PC .

It's easier to enable ICS on it, and it'll be easier to configure XP, if it's (XP is) one of the networked PC's . BUT then if ZA isnt registered (Or it doesnt give u an ICS option), you wont get on the net, without a 3rd party program that lets u use ICS .

There have been a few posts in here on how to configure 98 (or previous versions) of Windows on a network .

I can't tell you offhand, how to configure 98 SE (Or previous versions), coz I dont use 98 SE on the network here . Only XP and 1 PC with 2000 .

359906 2005-05-31 00:20:00 Thanks for the reply.
I'll get one of those network hubs.
As for configuring them all together, i think i'll try that program called something like "analougex" when the time comes.

359907 2005-05-31 00:24:00 I think that Analogx is only for ICS so all get on the net .

You still have to manually configure the networked PC's first (give them ips/workgroup names etc) . So, they actually do something .

359908 2005-05-31 00:35:00 Proxy from AnalogX is what you are wanting .

Check out Ferg's thread ( . pcworld . co . nz/showthread . php?t=58286" target="_blank">pressf1 . pcworld . co . nz) for a few more details .

359909 2005-05-31 04:21:00 grab a hub and some normal cables (as a cross over cable won't work).

as far as ZA goes you proberly havn't set the network to trusted.

98se ICS is not fantastic and very few free firewalls support it.
there are 3rd party programs (ie wingate) which work like ICS but there are not many free ones (or the free ones are really useless).

easiest way to go is to use a free proxy like analogX proxy, freeproxy or CCproxy. the more advanced proxys have caching and full socks5 support (analogX proxy dosn't have full socks5 which is a pain).

if you have problems with the firewalls not allowing windows networking there is an easy way to get around it without changing the firewalls.
