359858 2005-05-30 10:10:00 Can somebody help please. I have got this message after booting using the boot disc with the w98se cd in the drive and typing 'setup' to load the os.
What does it mean, how can I fix this?

359859 2005-05-30 10:35:00 Hi,

The error you posted can pop up for a number of reasons:

The CD-Rom is dirty or scratched
The Cd Crive is faulty
The IDE cables from the CD Drive to motherboard are faulty
The CD Drive driver files are corrupted

I'm guessing you used a Windows 98 boot disk in the A drive to boot to a Dos prompt. If you did this then make certain that when given the three options you choose Boot with CD-Rom support

Assuming you arrive at the A:/> prompt safely you can then move to the C prompt by typing CD C: and hiting enter.

From there type MKDIR WINCABS and hit enter

You will now have a new folder C:\WINCABS

Now type CD E:\WIN98 and hit enter.

Note: What ever the letter normally assigned to your CD drive is, it will be one letter higher now because the boot disk borrows the usual assigned letter to create a RAM Drive. Thus, if your CD Drive is normally D, then now its is E, hence the CD E: above

This ought to bring you to E:\WIN98 folder on your CD

Now type COPY *.* C:\WINCABS and hit enter

This will copy the entire contents of the win98 folder on the CD to your new folder you made.

Now all you need to do is type CD C:\WINCABS and at the C:\WINCABS> prompt type setup and windows will install without requiring your CD any more. Very handy if there is a chance the cd is dirty or the cd play is a little dodgy.

Regards,

Timothy

P.S After a successful installation you can safely delete the WINCABS folder you made to save space. Or burn it to a new CD as a backup.

Is the CD drive installed correctly?
Is the CD you are trying to install from the correct disk?
