359467 2005-05-29 03:42:00 Hi again peoples.

I am running XP pro on a new desktop p.c. and i have 8gb of hard drive used up.
Since installing more programs like games, nero, office winrar etc..
the startup of Windows is not the way it it should be.
When it gets to the screen that says "windows is starting up", it sits on that screen for about a minute. Then, whilst still on that screen the Windows startup music plays. After 20 more seconds it enters the desktop with no icons. After about 20 seconds the icons appear. After that it is fairly normal.

I had a similar problem with my last p.c. and i thought that it may have been a ram problem. Although now that i am running pc4200 Corsair ddr2, i doubt it is ram.

Is it my copy of Windows?
Could it be a drivers issue?
Possibly ram?

Remedies appreciated.

Thanks

359469 2005-05-29 04:56:00 Hey Tweake, thanks for the reply .

I'm pretty sure its not Spyware, i have had huge probs on previous p . c's with spyware so i am pretty fussy about hunting it down .
At startup, i have the Graphics card program doing its thing, monitor pivot software, msn, panda antivirus, not too sure what else . How do i check, and or remove programs from the startup list?

I might have a search for the current best spyware program at the moment, hopefully there is a working crack, so i can test the program out properly .

ANy other ideas?

Thanks

359470 2005-05-29 05:07:00 you probli hav programs silently starting up when u boot ur computer.

To stop these tasks from booting with ur comp go Start>Run>msconfig click on the Startup tab and deselect programs that u dnt want to boot. Be careful when doing and make sure u know wat the programs are b4 deselcting them.

An alternative method would b to install a third party program. Microsoft Antispyware is great 4 beginners which can b found at www.microsoft.com

Once installed open and go to Advanced Tools>System Explorers>Startup Programs and deselect programs from there

359471 2005-05-29 05:08:00 I wouldnt talk about cracks in the forum. Not a good idea.

This is most probably the cause of your problem.

read the rules, then wash your mouth out with soap ! then download adaware and spybot...both are free !

download hijackthis and post a report...it will list whats running and possibly any spyware.

359473 2005-05-29 05:35:00 give Microsoft's bootvis tool a go.

I've given you enough information to google with.

359474 2005-05-29 06:57:00 Do you have a lot of icons on your desktop, ie more than 100, if so then your icon cache may be too small, increasing the size of mine significantly decreased booting time and also the annoying slow refreshing of the desktop when going back to it after using other programs. zqwerty (97)
359475 2005-05-29 07:03:00 Have you try giving your HDD a defragment? Try doing so under safe mode.

Cheers :)

defragment the harddrive

no wallpaper

limit the amount of icons on the desktop

limit the amount of programes that are in the task bar (where the clock is)

limit the amount of programes in the startup folder

stop the window music at startup/closedown

all free;

spybot search and destroy,ad-aware se personal, microsoft antispyware, cwshredder, hijackthis, avg free anti viris, zonealarm free firewall

That should help out
