359836 2005-05-31 10:50:00 AVG7 scans emails as they arrive, and makes a sizeable song and dance about it...

Avg just ain't in the same class as Nod32, especially when it comes to "in the wild" viruses, this would be code perforimng virus like behaviour but without (as yet ) definitions available for the virus scanners.

As i think this thread clearly indicates common sence on the users part is the best defense.

359840 2005-05-31 19:27:00 dont worry metla you'll no doubt get one

....i had one this am but it's blank with just a zip attachement tho the one I got yesterday was a little more interesting cause it had all the blurb spoken of before supposedly from an isp etc.....saw one on a clients pc yesterday too that they swore they hadn't tried to open the attachement on lol tho the email itself had been opened.......anyway....anyone who opens an attachement of the type .exe, .com, .vbs, .js, .scr, .sip or a 'double extension' such as .doc.jpg or etc is an unfortunate fool. If you get an email from ANYONE AT ALL with ANY one of those attachements then DONT open it UNLESS YOU KNOW without ANY doubt whatsoever that someone has DEFINITELY deliberately sent that to you.....and if you get one with ANY 'double extension' it WILL be a virus so DONT open it. Sorry my list of dangerous extensions is most likely incomplete........
drcspy (146)
359841 2005-05-31 19:28:00 lol sorry ".sip" should of course read .zip drcspy (146)
359842 2005-05-31 19:50:00 also .bat, .cmd, .pif drcspy (146)
359843 2005-06-01 03:15:00 So what do you do with suspect emails that are of the "place the cursor of it and whooop, off it goes" or "highlight it and you're bagged" variety?

All very well about suspect attachments, that's even been on TV. Just don't open them and delete the email and it's attachment, but the others?

359844 2005-06-01 03:20:00 Turn off the preview pane.

Right click and delete suspect emails.
