My Phillips 150B LCD is 5 years old and has good performance still and no pixel faults...

359579 2005-05-31 00:44:00 $30 extra dollars gets you any LCD in the CMV/Polyview range with a 3 year zero stuck pixel policy, If someone in a office somewhere has a bright pixel after 2 weeks then shame on whoever done the purchasing, Stuck pixels are a flaw in the technology, No matter whom the manufacturer is it can still happen.Generally the actual screen component is manufactured seperatly and then sold to the company who assemble the unit, install the electronics and whack their brand on it, It may even be that some CMV models have the same screen component as some Phillips...

That said, The manufacturing process has matured and they don't appear to be as common as in the first few generations. I must have sold a couple of dozen CMV units (all with the full cover) and I haven't had a single report of any stuck pixels on any of them.

The other spin-off to the maturing product is better responce time, clarity of picture and overall cost. A game run on a new 8ms CMV looks a billion times better then a 5 year old phillips LCD.

359580 2005-06-26 04:57:00 im looking at buying a 17" LCD screen from pricespy.co.nz
and im wondering which one would be best to buy.

how noticeable are dead pixels, and how likely is it to get one?
also whats the difference between 8ms and 16ms.

ChiMei CMV CT-720D 17" 1280x1024 8ms DVI LCD for $365.63 looks like a good deal. but it says 4 dead pixel policy. how much will i have to spend to know i have a good solid 17" LCD monitor that will look good playing movies and the odd game.
im also going to use the graphics card radeon 9800pro 256mb, will this card work well with the monitor and play HL2 well?

thanks for your help.

359581 2005-06-26 06:37:00 If you have a look atwww.qmb.co.nz you will see a 17in lvd for $289+gst one thing I think that if you have an old pc then you had better check out your graphic`s card to see if it will take the new monotor. kk peter pan (6885)
359582 2005-06-26 09:14:00 im going to be using it with a radeon 9600pro 256mb, surely that will be good enough for the monitor.

that one has a zero dead pixel warranty, but it is only 16ms, what does this mean?

That model looks good though the 4 dead pixel policy could cause some to concern, A dead pixel is a pixel that remains unlit, permanently lit, or a solid colour, they are small and would look like a small fullstop just on the screen permently.
So if u do get one you will have to wait untill 4 of the go before you can take it back though i would not say dead pixels are all together that common, it does depend on the make tho.

The 8 and 16ms refer to how long (measured in milliseconds) the response time is to change the pixel from one color to another or whatever it wants to do, the faster the better. If it was 16ms it is said it is around 60hz refresh rate on a CRT monitor, the minimum for games so 8ms is alot better.
if you plan to play hl2 then the 8ms is a must otherwise you wil see ghosting and banding in action scenes.. which will blur and remove some of the fun from the game.

The card will work great with the monitor thru the dvi connection and will play HL2 very good depending on other system specifications...

cheers ;)

359584 2005-06-26 23:20:00 My Benq FP937S+ likes a refresh rate of 72hz when playing videos. The default it selected of 75hz caused the video to have horizontal stripes. KiwiTT_NZ (233)
359585 2005-06-27 00:46:00 I use a Direction 17" LCD L7AK6 Deluxe, have tried 2 AOC, 3 Philips and 1 CMV while all were better than my CRT the Direction leaves them all for dead.

It is not 8ms but you wont notice the difference, I play most games at the top res and see no lag at all.

The plus is it almost a wide screen as well, everything looks fantastic.

359586 2005-06-27 06:44:00 OmG . . . . . . I posted this AGES ago and I'm so used to my posts going off the front page that I didn't bother to check it after 2 weeks .

My conclusion anyways . stuff LCD, get a geforce 6600GT and have regular breaks :-), maybe LCD will come later . theres a nice little shop close to where I live called Expert Infotech, they've got the 2nd lowest price for a gt on pricespy ($274) and a pretty nice website . but the actual shop looks crap lol
