359821 2005-05-30 08:54:00 It seems it's more trouble.

Here is a message I received from a mate who copped it.

I have just received a message from support@xtra.co.nz named
*DETECTED* on line user violation.
It contained the following message & an .exe file attached to it, which didn't smell kosher to me so I rang Xtra Help Line, & yes it's a hoax.
Delete it immediately, do not open the attachment
The message reads:

We regret to inform you that your account has been suspended due to the violation of our site policy, more info is attached

359822 2005-05-30 08:56:00 These emails are another variant of the W32.MyTob.Az virus which could be slipping through the virus filters.
They appear to be coming from official sources such as ISP addresses.

Some of the subject headings noticed so far.

359823 2005-05-30 09:04:00 DELETE THE EMAIL WITHOUT OPENING THE ATTACHMENT!!

I got one of those last week and I am not with Xtra so it is obviously a virus. A very very authentic-looking one at that.

I forwarded my email with the attachment to someone with Linux to scan and open but the email must have done a runner as he never received it.

359825 2005-05-30 12:10:00 Definitely a Virus. My AV, Nod32, picked up about 6 of the sod's incoming. All with variations of the same theme. You're in deep doo doo with your mail account/admin, you'll need to open the attachment to avoid even deeper doo doo.

Quite a slick operation, mine came from my mail account administrator, my mail box admin, etc, etc, all from variations of my own domain. And who's the admin, apart from the people who run the servers? yeah! moi. So it seems they are csutomised to your ISP or mail server (if different)

What sort of AV are you guys using and do you have it set to scan your email. If yes to the latter, replace the former with a decent AV, if no, why not. If it can't scan email, yep, your learning, replace it with one that can. You never know, next time you could get a self activating one.
