360273 2005-06-01 05:59:00 I have XP Home and Office 97

I started losing my 9 last used files from the bottom of the file menu, they would start to build up again and poof, gone again. I went into Options and up popped the window MS Excel has encountered a problem etc. To read the error report I click on 'click here'. This went on to say, 'information regarding the condition of MS E when the problem accurred; the operating system version and computer hardware in use; etc. To view this report I clicked here again. The error report contained a lot of numbers BUT under System Information was the line 'Windows NT 5.1 Built: 2600' (???). At the bottom it said that the report would be sent from, :-
C:\docume~1\johnan~1\locals~1\temp\d945_appcompac. txt
Right says I, that's easy to fix and took out Excel and reloaded it, same difference. Must be Office says I, and took the whole thing out. Used Ashampoo to clean up the registry and followed up with RegHealer for good measure. Reinstalled Office and now the only way I can open up a file in Excel is to go into My Documents each time, HELP.
I looked into the temp file and there was no txt file in it nor could I find it with 'Find files and folders' and the number changes each time I open up Excel everything else seems OK

360274 2005-06-01 08:16:00 It would be helpful to know the exact error Excel gave you.
When you "took it out" did you do a complete uninstall and from where? Add/remove? Off the install menu?
Uninstall Office again completely. Then do a registry clean to make sure its all gone. And check the hdd too to make sure no files are left over.
Reboot the PC for good measure after all that too.
Clean out your temp folder etc.
Do a spyware and virus check.
Then reinstall Office and see what happens.

360275 2005-06-01 08:44:00 I did not do a spyware or virus check nor clear the temp file, I will start again and do it all, it will have to be tomorrow now.
Thanks

Here are a couple of things you could try ...

Unhide your files and search for excel.xlb. Rename the file excelold.xlb and then try opening Excel. If that does not work rename the file back to excel.xlb, and then try the following which was printed in March 2005 PC World as follows:

"Problem: All of a sudden you can’t open a file in Word, Excel, Outlook or another Microsoft Office application.

Quick Fix 1: Click Help, Detect and Repair to launch a file-repair utility. Make sure “Discard my customised settings and restore default settings” is unchecked and click Start. If a file has been corrupted or something else is out of place, the program fixes the damage. Have your Office installation CD handy before you begin.

Quick Fix 2: If an Office application won’t start, open Control Panel and click or double-click Add or Remove Programs. Select the entry for Microsoft Office and then choose Click here for support information. Click Repair to reinstall all the apps."

360277 2005-06-01 11:24:00 Thanks pctek and Oxie, I do not have excel.xlb on my computer and my problem is as far as Office is concerned only with Excel.
Have checked everything, no viruses, no spyware and all was good, reinstalled Office, no change BUT
When I start up now I have a box titled 'Can't run 16-bit Windows program'. Inside it reads, 'Insufficient memory to run this application. Quit one or more Windows applications and then try again'. And thats when I boot up. I have 512 MB RAM.
Then
My display
Manufacturer; NVIDIA
Chip type; RIVA TNT2 Ultra
Memory; 32.0 MB
Current display 1024x768 (32bit) (60Hz) and that's the max I can get. That is something else that is wrong now.

360278 2005-06-01 22:06:00 Hmmm. Bit drastic perhaps but I'd reinstall windows from scratch. pctek (84)
