360179 2005-06-01 05:03:00 Gidday,

This is a long story so I'll cut to the chase!
I have a 120GB H/Drive that has XP Pro & eveything I want set up already on it.
I now have a new PC.
I want to take out the 40GB H/Drive that came with the new PC & put in the 120GB & run as before (without having to re-install all programs etc. again).

Physically possible yes but is this possible?

Any help appreciated.

Vandaman.

You will run into problems due to windows not having the right motherboard drivers. Windows may not even boot.

360181 2005-06-01 06:08:00 It can be done if you have your XP install CD, and then you will also need the motherboard CD:

360182 2005-06-01 06:15:00 And seeing as how you managed to get a new comp with a 40gb HD I would assume its a supermarket special, So i will also assume that the Mobo and all other drivers are locked in the recovery cd? Metla (12)

360184 2005-06-04 03:20:00 Hi all,

Thanks for your replies.
In short - no joy.
I backup all my data first, to be safe, then tried the method given in the link by Terry.
I used a recovery disc I had for this new PC (this is an IBM Thinkcentre).
Unfortunatley they have changed the recovery method from that described in the article.
There was no detecting of the current O/S with options to repair - just a straight out re-install to factory conditions.
Soooooooo that's what I did and had to load all my programs again then recover my data (and network mappings blah de blah de blah...).
What a pain in the butt!

cheers,
Vandaman
