360352 2005-06-01 15:18:00 Hi guys,

I'm deciding on which graphics card to get. I've decided on an FX5700.

I've got two choices:
Leadtek GeForce FX A360 TD MyVIVO video card, 128MB DDR, GeForceFX 5700, 8XAGP, VIVO, DVI $276 (www.ascent.co.nz)

OR

Leadtek GeForce FX A360 TD MyVIVO video card, 256MB DDR, GeForceFX 5700, 8XAGP, VIVO, DVI $321 (www.ascent.co.nz)

Only difference is the amount of onboard memory...

Is it really worth more $$ for what I'll get in performance?

Cheers

360353 2005-06-01 19:59:00 Yeah for about $280+GST you can get a GeForce 6600 GT 128MB, it will whoop ass on both the cards you mentioned.

Have a look here (www.pricespy.co.nz) for further options.

The 5700 is dated although it's not a shabby card... however it's one generation back so I would rather suggest buying something like the 6600GT, it's a current offerning and like I said it would whoop ass on both those cards you suggested.

cheers

360354 2005-06-01 22:01:00 I agree. Get the 6600GT instead.
If you really have to have the 5700 I'd get the extra ram.

360355 2005-06-01 22:09:00 but at 270 $ surely the 6600GT is gonna be shabby... thats a more high end card and to me the more quality card would be the FX at this price range... hamstar (4)
360356 2005-06-01 22:42:00 Extra ram on that card wont give you any more performance.

The ram allows you to have more/larger textures in video memory, which means diddly-squat if the video card chipset can't run fast enough to make use of it.

And buy a 6600GT, a 5700 is just madness.

360357 2005-06-01 23:52:00 ugh... now you've got me wanting a 6600 but none i can find for sub $300 has a video-in. hamstar (4)
360358 2005-06-01 23:59:00 Better off buying a TV card to get video in, They generally have far superior software and capture abilities, You don't lose the feature when you upgrade the video card, Plus you get to watch TV. Metla (12)

Well that's even more reason to save money and buy something that will last longer... the FX5700 is not it... trust me you'll be better off with the 6600GT. The last thing you want is to have a card that isn't able to render the next generation of games or have a card which renderes the games crappy... Save the extra cash you need and buy something that will last for the forseeable future... if you're working at BP you will be better off spending your money on a product that has a longer "life expectancy"... bearing that in mind the 6600GT is the card to get.
