361058 2005-06-03 23:36:00 A retired couple that I know are having problems with installing Norton Internet Security 2005.

They had a previous version on their HP Compaq desktop that they bought from the Warehouse Stationary six months ago. That version said that it was due to expire soon, so they purchased a retail CD version of Norton Internet Security 2005 as the upgrade.

BUT something happened in the installation of the new version. I don't know what and the couple, being computer novices, were unable to give me any insight into what had happened.

I have been able to establish the following:

Norton Internet Security 2005 appears in the Add/Remove Programs applet of Control Panel
Clicking the "Remove" button only results in the screen flashing and the Add/Remove Programs window reappearing
There is a Symantec directory in c:\Program Files.
But the only folder in there is one for Live Update. No other Norton Internet Security folders, or any that look like they could be, are present in C:\Program Files.
Trying to use the CD from the Norton Internet Security 2005 package results in the opening screen displaying, but when Install is clicked, the opening screen disapears and nothing happens.

It is as if just enough of the Norton Internet Security 2005 installation was achieved to make the computer think that the full install was successful.

The computer is running Windows XP with SP2 installed. The Windows Firewall, in SP2, is running and Automatic Updates are enabled.

Any suggestions on how to clean up the situation and to a full install of Norton Internet Security 2005, so their computer is protected, would be appreciated.

361059 2005-06-03 23:43:00 Corrupted registey would be the obvious assumption to make, There has been mention made here of a Nortons removal tool that maybe of use.

Personally I would say format the PC, sell the newly purchased Nortons on trademe and either purchase NOD32 or download and install AVG 7 Free edition....But I doubt thats what you want to hear.....

361060 2005-06-04 02:52:00 There is some hideously involved uninstall/reinstall help on Nortons website. Its a nasty piece of software. Take Metlas advice. pctek (84)
361061 2005-06-04 09:05:00 As good and effective as Nortons is, it's responsible for more PC diagnostic problems than I can recall. Ditch it. Greg (193)

361063 2005-06-04 09:31:00 Or just uninstall it, then use http://www.ccleaner.com

Then run ccleaner go to the tools / uninstall programs menu/tab, see if u can uninstall the program thru this. If not, highlight the Symantec entry and click on delete entry.

Delete the norton/symantec folder and the symantec shared folder, under

C: \ Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared (if this is the only Symantec program on your system), then use ccleaner to get rid of the rubbish in the registry.

It was once a reasonable program.
Its now only surviving (and capitalising) off the good name it once had.
