2005-06-02 11:00:00 | Greetings all No mac Bagging please g3 233 imac 192 mb ram 192 mb virtual ram 4 gB ram OS 9.something This runs like a dog, it is slow, sluggish and looks hideous (the gui) and seems to take forever on the net, everything was freshly installed before I purchased it, and I know it should run better (I know it won't run like a rocket) but I can't work out how to do it. I have been reading up at lowend mac and i don't think a ram upgrade is possible, I'm wondering if putting in a faster Hd would help, I have the disks for os8 and 9, but would prefer and also a way to make it look better (yes I'm vain, OS7 looked better) It has IE 4.5 I think, and I'm holding off improving it as well it'll probably run slower any speed up tips please I am not anti-mac by the way, I'm just really unfamiliar with them Thanks

Disk First Aid Apple supply a useful tool which can repair many hard disk problems and it is a good idea to run it from time to time to keep things in good shape . It is usually found in the Utilities folder but if you have trouble finding it, go to File/Find and search for Disk First Aid . Select your Hard Disk and click on Verify or Repair . Desktop Rebuild If the Desktop file becomes too large, the computer may have difficulty reading it efficiently and speedily . This can cause the Finder to access files more slowly . Rebuilding the Desktop file can clean up old information and speed up Finder access . To do this: Start (or Restart) the computer . Before the screen lights up, hold down the OPTION-COMMAND keys simultaneously . Hold these keys down until a message appears asking if you want to rebuild the desktop . Release the keys and click OK . Allow the computer to restart normally . The rebuilding process will take several minutes, depending on the size of your hard drive . Modern Mac systems are designed to operate with Virtual Memory turned on as this way programs use less memory for operation . To check or adjust Virtual Memory go to Apple menu/Control panels/memory . It is normal on Power Macs to have Virtual Memory on and the amount selected in the box to be 1MB more then the built-in memory . If you need extra memory to run a particular program or run several programs at once it is quite acceptable to increase the number in the box to to make this Virtual Memory available for use . There may be a decrease in speed for some things but generally it works very well . Unlike OS X, older Mac systems do not automatically manage memory requirements of a program and sometimes it is necessary to increase this especially if strange thing are happening or you are getting frequent Type 2 or 3 errors . To adjust the memory available to a program, first make sure the program is closed Find the folder the program is in and then click on the program icon once to highlight it . Go to File/Get Info/Memory . Increase the preferred size by 2000k or whatever you think it may need . Of course it will all depend on how much RAM (Random Access Memory) you have installed and how much is available for allocation . Close the screen by clicking in the top left corner and restart your program . Closing Programs When you click in the top left corner of a program and it disappears, the program is not actually closed and is still using system resources . If you select the Finder in the top right corner you will see it still listed there . To close a program select it in the Finder and then go to File/Quit . Keep a watch on the Finder to avoid having too many programs open at once as they will use up all available memory unless of course you have a large amount of installed RAM . Go to the Apple Menu in the top left and select About this computer . You will see the operating system listed here, as well as other useful information about the amount of built in memory and the amount being used by any programs you have open . |

2005-06-02 11:44:00 | yeah, I had one in at work today and is was as slow as #&$! If you actually had 192 MB of physical RAM, then that is plenty for OS 9 . The hard drives are pretty slow and noisey too . I wouldn't bother spending any money on a new one though . ok things to check . 1) Run disk aid to check that the filesystem is okay . Should be in a utilities folder . 2) Check out the extensions manager (one of trhe control panels) and make sure there aren't a ton of unneeded extensions loading (e . g . opengl stuff whne you don't do 3D, voices etc) . Try the "OS 9 base" option instead of my settings . 3) Internet Explorer (by some company named Microsoft) seemed to be the best browser to use . Find out how you can increase the "preferred memory" settings for an application, as the default memory allocated to apps tends to be very, very conservative . Basically, find the Internet Explorer app itself and select it, "get info" form finder menu and change memory settings . 4) Turn virtual memory off . 5) Eliminate any anti-virus scanners (not needed) 6) Try to update to OS 9 . 2 7) Rebuild desktop: Rebuild Desktop (command(Apple Key)+option after startup chime) - Hold this key combo while the machine starts until the desktop loads and a dialog box is displayed asking if you wish to rebuild the desktop for disk x . - click yes - the question will be repeated for each disk . - Rebuilding the desktop should become part of the Mac user's monthly system maintainence actions . 8) Delete some preferences from your preferences folder (inside your System folder) . Google for more info . 9) Reinstall the system folder from scratch 10) Install Linux :D I will now flame about OS 9 . . . it was always terrible . :angry

2005-06-03 11:45:00 | You will have to install the updates in the order listed. docs.info.apple.com This is not likely to increase your browsing speed, if it is slow it is more lilely to be a modem or phone line issue. Under Mac OS 9 and earlier there is a hosts file in the root level of the system folder. If you're using Open Transport it can also be located inside System Folder:Preferences, although either will work. Or you can just open the TCP/IP control panel and go into Advanced under User Mode in the Edit menu. Then you have the option of choosing whatever hosts file you like and it will be put where it needs to be.

2005-06-03 11:53:00 | Remember that you are talking about a 7 year old computer. You have to expect it to be rather slow. My old PowerMac 6500 (225MHz) was frustratingly slow by the time I replaced it, and that was more than three years ago. There really isn't that much more you can do other than reformat the hard disk and hope for the best. Have you considered buying a Mac mini?

2005-06-04 00:37:00 | I am using the inbuilt network card to hook into the existing network, which is on orcon bitsream, might try the upgrade to 9.2 I realise it is an old comp, but it was in my price range, and i can't justify getting a mac mini, (I have an athlon 2500+ which does everything-ish on the work front), I like the imac because it is small enough to set up anywhere in the house and doesn't require multiple trips to get all the components to the new position, I basically grab the case, carry it to where I want it, plug it in, the athlon I have to dismantle and reconnect everything when i get to the next room I'll be back with more questions soon have to keep playing with it for a while thanks

2005-06-11 08:10:00 | Hi all i'm back Well i have upgraded to mac os 9.2 and everything seems to run smoothly, I have a few questions though about any mac software is there a free/cheap word processor out there somewhere i have looked at a few but one won't work with 9.2 if it's part of a tcp-ip network and the other has no dictionary (a must with the kids spelling), I was also looking for a few little games, paint, music, arty programs you know more creative less gore and splatter type things, would it be worth tracking down back issues of something like MacFormat to find these things, I think our local library has copies (at least i hope it does) Also I have recently aquired an 8 Gb 5400rpm hard drive would it be worth using this to replace the existing 4 Gb harddrive which i have a feeling is a bit slow? is it hard to replace the harddrives, i've seen a few tutorials online, but well I'd rather hear the view of a real person, well at least one of those that frequents this board Cheers

2005-06-11 12:04:00 | Nisus should do the job www.nisus.com Do you not have Clarisworks or Appleworks on the OS 8 or 9 discs somewhere. If you can get any of the CD's that came with some older Mac magazines you will get a good selection of games. There are plenty to download at these sites though mac.softpedia.com www.tucows.com www.tucows.com www.tucows.com Do you really want to replace your harddrive now you have updated and do it all over again. I haven't replaced one on a G3 but providing it is the same type of drive once you have access to it it should be very simple. Apple manuals with full instructions available here. www.whoopis.com
