360568 2005-06-02 07:19:00 I have some importatnt data downloaded onto floppydisks and when trying to save them to another computer the following error is displayed:
Cannot copy <filename>: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

Are there any bright sparks out there who know how to fix this?

The laptop the files originated on is very old with Win 95 and only a floppy drive and no USB ports or modem capability.
The floppydrive on the computer I'm trying to get the files to is working fine.

360569 2005-06-02 07:23:00 If u can still read the files on that floppy, I would copy them to the hard drive, and find another floppy, and save them to it. Speedy Gonzales (78)

Hadn't thought of that. Doh.
However it comes up with two errors when doing this.
Explorer error: There was a problem sending the command to the program.
Excel error: <file> cannot be accessed. The file may be read-only, or you maybe trying to access a read-only location. Or, the server the document is stored on may not be responding.

Checked the properties of the file and both read-only and archive were checked. Unticked the read-only box and left the tick in archive.
Result is the same problem as above Excel error. Explorer error does not occur again.

Still lost

Your problem may well lie in the fact that floppy drives are difficult in that a disk made on one computer may well not be read on another computer due to track alignments being different. Has the laptop got a network card installed?

360572 2005-06-02 07:50:00 I recall seeing somewhere years ago that the floppy ought to be formatted by the laptop before the file copying is done. The reading errors sometimes arise if the formatting has been done on another machine. TonyF (246)

Does it make sense that the floppies made on the laptop have worked on another PC?
Laptop has not got a network card, modem or USB port to plug anything into.

Only has one parralel and one (I think) serial connection in the back.

The floppies were not formatted prior to file copy from the laptop. They were brand new preformatted floppies. Is that enough.

Can't just shoot back to the laptop as it is 150 km away and it is snowing here!

360575 2005-06-02 08:49:00 The point was that the formatting should be by the laptop, even if already formatted elsewhere. You say that laptop floppies readable by another machine. Can the problem disks be tried on it ( or is it miles away over the mountains)..
Cheers TonyF

Regretfully the other machine is across the ditch in Welly.
Will brave the snow tomorrow morning, make the drive and format the disks in the laptop and try again.

Thanks for all the help :)

360577 2005-06-02 09:35:00 good thread with suggestions (www.experts-exchange.com)

But, yes, try on the machine that wrote it first and get a backup pronto.
