361148 2005-06-04 04:55:00 My Specs:

Windows XP home
IntelD865GBF mobo (4 DIMM slots)
Intel P4 2.4 GHz CPU
Geforce 6600 gt AGP vid card
2 * 256 mb PC3200 DDR SDRAM

I want to upgrade my RAM and have a couple of questions:
1. How much more performance would I get upgrading to 1024 MB of RAM? Would I be better off saving for a faster CPU?

2. Should I get 2 more 256 MB sticks or scrap them and get 2 new 512 MB sticks?

361149 2005-06-04 05:30:00 I would upgrade the ram. How many slots have you got for DDR Ram? What's the maximum your motherboard can take? Dual channel supported? techie (7177)
361150 2005-06-04 05:36:00 and.............get the ram which your motherboard will support at the fastest possible clock speed............ie: 2.5cl rather than 3.0cl........it WILL make a difference........I have an 800FSB P4 2.4Ghz also and usually run 512mb ddr pc3200 TWINMOS cl2.5 ram in it, (at the mo I've put in an extra 256mb so it's 768), anyway I've had a lot of different ram in this system and I find that this particular ram seems to allow the system to run better than most.....in fact shoud I wish I can overclock the cpu to 3.0Ghz and it'll run perfectly and not even get hot, however different ram types wont allow me to do this........ drcspy (146)
361151 2005-06-04 05:54:00 I have 4 DIMM slots. I think it's dual channel. How do I know the fastest RAM supported? My CPU FSB is 133 MHz and Memory bus is 166.26 MHz.

Everest says this about my Memory Bus:
Bus type: Dual DDR SDRAM
Bus width: 128 bit
Real clock: 167 MHz
Effective clock: 333MHz
Bandwidth: 5333MB/s

361152 2005-06-04 13:18:00 Go to your motherboards website, find your motherboard see what the fastest ram it can take or do a google search on your motherboard.

1. The ram upgrade would be the easier upgrade to do and cheaper depending on the ram maker and the speed and latencys of the ram.

2. 2 x 512 mb ddr would be good.

3. Check out www.pricespy.co.nz for prices.

361153 2005-06-05 00:19:00 OK What does this mean:

The Desktop Board D865GBF supports DDR400, DDR 333 and DDR 266 SDRAM Memory. There are two DIMM channels supporting up to four 184-pin DDR SDRAM Dual Inline Memory Modules (DIMMs) with gold-plated contacts. The Desktop Board D865GBF is designed to support a memory range of 64 MB minimum (using 64 Mbit technology) up to 4.0 GB maximum (using 512 Mbit technology) that conforms to the latest Intel® JEDEC specification Addendums. The Desktop Board D865GBF supports non-ECC DIMMs.

361154 2005-06-05 00:25:00 I think I should get 2 * 512MB PC3200 DDR400 SDRAM, would this be right?

What do you think about this:

Kingmax Dual Channel Memory Kit, 2x512MB, DDR-SDRAM, DIMM, DDR400 from Ascent.co.nz for $183.06

yes/no?

361156 2005-06-05 11:57:00 What is/was the initial brand or model of the RAM(s) that are/were installed on your mobo? It's best to purchase and install the same type (e.g. brand etc.) of RAM compare to your original RAMs.

Cheers :)

361157 2005-06-05 21:49:00 I think I should get 2 * 512MB PC3200 DDR400 SDRAM, would this be right?

What do you think about this:

Kingmax Dual Channel Memory Kit, 2x512MB, DDR-SDRAM, DIMM, DDR400 from Ascent.co.nz for $183.06
And you say:
The Desktop Board D865GBF supports DDR400, DDR 333 and DDR 266 SDRAM Memory.

But not a mixture of the types.
As Jameskan says, keep the modules the same.
Unless you are taking the old ones out completely and replacing them...
