361411 2005-06-09 10:06:00 Surfer Joe is obviously a psychotic nut or some idiot trying to be funny in a very obtuse way ...Hey, please mind your manners. Don't post it if you can't keep it friendly, more so since you are not contributing to the thread in any useful manner ... Jen (38)
361412 2005-06-09 10:11:00 I say it again . . . XP, PRO or HOME have the same attitude toward inserted-after-the-fact drives . They can SEE them :dogeye: , but cannot ACCESS them successfully :xmouth: .

I still dont get what you are on about here . . . I very often move hard drives around between computers and have no problems accessing and using the data contain therein .

the only thing I can gather you may be thinking of, is that windows doesnt like moving an existing install onto new hardware . . .

361413 2005-06-11 01:20:00 OK . . I'll stop using the blue text . . . it's just that I have detached retinas and it makes it easier to see (quite frankly, I wish the default was to blue on the site, but that's just my thought) . :dogeye:

Anyway . . . I think I have an answer to my own quandary .

I have used RAID arrays and JBOD for a long time, and that may be the reason for my hardheadedness, even though I prefer confusion . I know that in RAID format, there is no way to indiscriminately swap drives from one to another tower .

I like to use four 200 gig hard drives and an array of another 4 as JBODs, (I keep a lot of files in the form of . iso, jpeg, . wav and mp3 . I use a lot of 0's and 1's and have to keep medical records for over 40 people in here too . So, as you might see, I have need for the redundancy and accuracy of these files . Some are critical, some are just for fun .

Now, trying to move a RAID ( 0 or 1 or 0+1) from one tower to another will not work as the formatting is special for each of them . As far as JBODs go, that's where I am at a loss . I have never been able to swap a JBOD'd disk from one tower to another .

So, and again, I might be wrong here, I think JBODs are not especially formatted or made dependent upon the existence of each other in the system, (even having different drive letters as assigned by XP) let alone tied to the RAID's either . Yet, I find I cannot access the data from any of them if they get swapped to another tower even if the old and new tower have the same version of XP-PRO in them and have the same clock, processor, mobo or whatever . Here's a real strange part too . . . . I had need to take one out of the JBOD for a few days, and when I re-inserted it, it was "not there" to the device manager and also (even though I could "see" there were files there), I could not access them . Could there be a running time/date stamp on them?

Still a little lost, but I can see there might be a light at the end of the tunnel .

I apologize to Chemical_Ali, as I must have said something to him/her that made them angry at me . I am not in the habit of pulling the tails of strangers, although I do confess to doing so on good friends .

I have found I am getting a lot of very strange phishing scams coming in to my mailbox that are using the pcworld . co . nz url on the address . Just thought you'd like to know

Not a lot you can do about it if they are sending from pcworld.co.nz address.
There have been a lot of these around lately and this thread refers.

361416 2005-06-11 07:43:00 SurferJoe46, the interoperability of RAID drives is dependant completely on the controller. You cannot take one RAID array, or a drive from that RAID array, and plonk it in another controller and just expect it to work. The stripe sizes, drive orders, and access / write methods must all be identical.

If you use software RAID, then the process is dependant on the driver - or more specifically, the OS itself. In the case of Windows RAID, I am not aware that (atleast in W2K) you can add entire arrays and maintain data.

Under no circumstances can you take any single drive from a RAID array and attempt to access the data on it from elsewhere - unless you had an IDENTICAL controller and IDENTICAL array otherwise. Ofcourse I'm sure you knew that, and that's what you've been trying to say...

JBOD is different. In JBOD drives are not accessed as an array, and, as the acronym suggests, act independantly of each other. They do not require controller specific options (for the most part), and can be freely accessed from anything.

IDE devices generally work independantly. Much like JBOD with SCSI and SATA, the drives can be moved around between Operating Systems (file-system-awareness dependant), controllers and systems freely. You can take an IDE drive from one Windows XP machine, plonk in another, and expect it to work just fine.

If you were to set up a hardware or software IDE RAID array, then the story is as it is with SATA.

Now I'm tired, so in my arrogant ignorance am not going to try and digest too much more of this thread - so I'm sorry if I missed the answer:

fnphoto, when you put anything else in the same position on the controller as that sneaky hard drive, does it show up in Windows? Are the drivers for both your IDE controllers (presuming you have two) visible in device manager? How many IDE connections does your motherboard have?

361418 2005-06-11 22:49:00 It's gotta be the electricity here, I guess. I just got off the phone with a couple of friends in Connecticut, and they too have had no ability to do what everyone here says happens for them all the time. I understand the RAID 0+1 controversy, but we have never had this work for us, and there are a lot of geek-types here who say it CAN be done, but it requires writing kernal commands. I don't know..it has never worked for me, and I guess I am just gonna have to live with that. Sorry to get everybody up in arms, I will cease posting and asking questions and maybe just be a lurker for the next year. SurferJoe46 (51)
361419 2005-06-11 23:36:00 I have now managed to install XP Home onto the 40Gb HDD using the XP installation disk which did recognise the drive. When I boot into that disk all drives are now visible from within windows. BUT when booting again into the old version - still no sign of the second drive. This problem is driving me nuts HELP PLEASE!I take it you still have your problem? Unfortunately it seems your thread got hijacked to a different topic without your problem being addressed. Jen (38)

My question still stands :)
