| 361402 | 2005-06-06 23:20:00 | How is it formated as? Sounds like a Primary. As a second drive it really shound be formated as an Extended with the actual drive created inside the extended partition. I have tried partitioning & formatting as both logical in an extended drive and as a primary but still no joy when the drive is installed into the computer. Windows XP still doesn't see the drive - either in explorer, computer management, or any other program. The Bios recognises the drive correctly and the jumpers are set to slave. |

| 361403 | 2005-06-06 23:25:00 | What type of cable are you using 40 or 80 wire? Use 80 wire(ultra ATA) and set to cable select, set you master to cable select too. When plugged in the drive on the end of the cable will be master, the drive half way along will be slave. |

| 361404 | 2005-06-06 23:46:00 | What? I don't get that. A HDD if master, doesn't matter whether its on the primary or the secondary. Anyway the problem may be if in the neclosure it will be set with jumpers to master. Then if you put it in the PC as a 2nd HDD, and its attached to the same cable as the other HDD, it should have the jumpers chnaged to slave. Oe even if its not on the same cable as the other HDD, cause probably the secondary IDE will have a CD drive on it as master? The HDD is on the same 40pin cable as the master drive with the main drive installed on the end. |

Windows XP still doesn't see the drive - either in explorer, computer management, or any other program. The Bios recognises the drive correctly and the jumpers are set to slave. I have now managed to install XP Home onto the 40Gb HDD using the XP installation disk which did recognise the drive. When I boot into that disk all drives are now visible from within windows. BUT when booting again into the old version - still no sign of the second drive. This problem is driving me nuts HELP PLEASE! |

| 361406 | 2005-06-09 07:02:00 | Please NZ'rs, bear with me . . . I am so confused that I go back and read and re read the posts and my head is swimming . I bear no animosity nor do I mean to be unkind, but I just don't get it at all . I have been hammering on this topic for a while here, and keeping in form with my type 1 personality, and the fact that since I am retired now and have a lot (read: very much!) time on my hands to raise some muck here and there, but mostly HERE!, I say it again . . . XP, PRO or HOME have the same attitude toward inserted-after-the-fact drives . They can SEE them :dogeye: , but cannot ACCESS them successfully :xmouth: . Now, there is some discourse on another post [not here] that proffers something about using a utility to gain control of this situation, but so far, I am either too dense to understand the concept, or I am off in left field (a baseball term to NZ people who might be here), and urinating into a headwind . I remain unconvinced yet, and will gladly see the light if this has a solution . |

Maybe he is right. But it is possible that out Kiwi No8 fencing wire approach to some things may well turn up an answer, or not. But, give the guy a break. PJ  :annoyed: |
