361138 2005-06-04 10:57:00 Don't go to Gamma Computers. One of the guys on this forum works there and even him, says its utter crap! No need for anymore long stories about them.... techie (7177)
361139 2005-06-04 11:29:00 There is Gamma (www.gamma.co.nz/) which is on the fringe of the city in Newton Road. Never been in the store myself so I'm not sure how large the range of products on display are for walk-in shoppers, but it is a large company (http:).

Would you buy from a company that states this:

All prices are exclusive of GST & Freight.
Prices are subject to the Terms & Conditions of Sale.
Errors and omissions are expected.

Clearly on the bottom of each web page?

Actually my first computer was a Gamma 486 DX-33 with a 250MB HDD and 8MB of Ram, running WFWG 3.11 and it served me very well for a number of years.

http://www.pricespy.co.nz/

Click on the link for Sellers and sort the Location column to get a list of sellers in your region. Look in the Shop & freight charges column to see if the seller has a retail shop. PriceSpy is a great website for comparing prices and buying computer hardware.

361143 2005-08-18 09:05:00 Krival raises an interesting question . For better or worse, people seek my opinion about new comp's . For the technologically challenged who only want word processing and internet I send them to Dick Smiths .

Sure the guy at the front desk may not be a specialist, but I've found with DSE if it breaks, they fix it, no problems . They can get a reasonably priced AMD system with good back up service . And DSE is still going to be there to honour the extended guarantee .

For those who know a bit more, and probably want higher specs for less cost and are willing to take a risk the company may fold before the guarantee expires I direct them to a specialist retailer .

Any comments? I'd be interested in how others rate that advise .

361144 2005-08-18 09:36:00 Nothing wrong with the DSE configured systems, though the thread starter seems to be looking for hardware rather then a comp, and DSE can fail in that regard due to limited product lines and the probability of being served by someone whose knowledge of a games machine (just an example) only goes as far as an Xbox.

As for small shops falling over, The largest NZ based company burned in flames,as did the largest UK based assembler, so I can hardly see that line of reasoning being legitimate.Unless you know the finiancial position of any company you choose to do business with you can't garentee it will be there tomorrow,no matter how many units they have moved (though I think DSE are pretty safe......)

For customers outside of Auckland it maybe a consideration that faulty systems will be sent away to be fixed rather then being serviced locally.
