1386356 2014-10-16 01:18:00 Bought some old RAM to upgrade my old PC with an Asus P5K-SE motherboard .

It has 4 memory slots in total with only 2x 1GB installed, Transcend JetRAM I think it's called, worked fine for years . Bought another 2x 1GB Corsair XMS2 RAM sticks to fill the empty slots . It only shows 3 . 5gb in My Computer but that's good enough for me . Problem is, it crashes in about 30-60 seconds after booting into XP .

Thought maybe XP can't handle it so I tried installing Win7 but it crashes in the middle of the splash screen, even worse!

Could it be the RAM itself that's dodgy, or can it simply not be installed alongside my older RAM? I'm using the RAM in the correct dual channels so they're paired with each other and not with the old RAM so I thought it'd be fine .

My CPU heatsink is massive and blocks the first RAM stick so I can't take it out unless I take out my entire motherboard to remove the heatsink which is a big job, so I just want to get some advice before I take it out and have to disassemble + reapply thermal paste etc . then have to do it all over again if I find the Corsair RAM still crashes even without the old RAM installed .

Here's a screenshot in CPU-Z for more info:

1386357 2014-10-16 01:40:00 Sounds a bit like the Memory is not compatible with each other.

The Corsair is Xtreme Performance memory where the Transcend is not. Looking at the Pic, the Transcend is showing as slower any way - 400MHz where as the Corsair is 800MHz

While it should throttle down, sometimes you cant have just any ol Memory installed.

Real way to test is since the Transcend works OK, is to remove it and see if the Corsair will run OK on its own.

Had similar here over the weekend, tried to upgrade my media PC, had the same speed memory, but different brands, and there was all sorts of troubles when all four slots were full. Took AGES to find 4 sticks that would all play together nice.

1386358 2014-10-16 02:08:00 So the only solution is to replace the old RAM with the Corsair and buy another 2 matching Corsair pairs to go with it?

I was hoping maybe there was a way to throttle down the new RAM in BIOS or something, but I guess not.

When looking for compatible RAM, does everything have to match exactly? 6400c4, 4-4-4-12, 800mhz

This is the Corsair RAM I've got:

1386359 2014-10-16 02:16:00 Just to add, if your OS is 32 bit, then only around 3 to 3.5 GB will show, and you can't use more (except if you run a patch to enable Physical Address Extension). Terry Porritt (14)
1386360 2014-10-16 02:34:00 yea I mentioned that but like I said 3.5gb is good enough for me, but I'll still buy 4 pairs of 1GB sticks if it means they'll all get along together. Vicx (11114)
1386361 2014-10-16 08:00:00 What does CPU-Z show for the new sticks? Does their SPD timings data match up with the old RAM for any speed? If there are no timings in the SPD table that match the old RAM this could be why you are having issues.

That is why it's better not to mix brands\speeds of RAM. Sometimes it can work, sometimes it doesn't.

If you want the minimum of fuss, I would advise if you can afford\justify it, buy another 2 sticks of the Corsair XMS2 so you have 4x Corsair XMS2 sticks and then they should all play nice.
Unless of course you have faulty slots, the motherboard is a bit sick and can't handle 4 sticks, which case you may have the problems anyway.

1386362 2014-11-17 05:44:00 I ended up buying 2x Corsair 2GB for 4gb total which works fine in XP and Win7 . Then I plugged in the other 2x Corsair 1GB sticks for a total of 6gb, it crashes on Win7 startup but works fine in XP . I got the same crashing problem in both XP and Win7 when I added in the 1gb sticks as mentioned in my original post, I assumed it was incompatible with my old Jetram, but I'm still getting crashing in Win7 boot . Is there any way to diagnose the problem?

Here's a screenshot in cpu-z . Slot 1/3 = 2x 2gb . Slot 2/4 = 2x 1gb .
