1372794 2014-04-15 10:31:00 recently, like a year ago, i decided to take advantage of a piano in our home, I realise talent and ability are essential but never realised how difficult it is to learn and play, I even had lessons from a piano teacher - there are musical genii out there, Stevie Wonder, Paul MCartney to name a couple but to some of us it appears to be akin to a foreign language - any sympathic comments out there? jayal (1291)

1372796 2014-04-15 10:45:00 Like most skills unless you happen to be naturally talented it takes a lot of practice and hard work to learn the piano. Do not be discouraged if you do not progress as fast as you would like. It is worth the effort. At the very least you will gain a good understanding of music and a very real appreciation of those that can play an instrument well. CliveM (6007)

Yeah, it would be easier if we were under 10 :(

1372798 2014-04-16 00:05:00 I learnt the piano as a youngster and I think that it made a difference that I learnt at an early age. But I do not have talent, just ability. I have noticed that people with talent do not necessarily need music and still play beautifully. I need the music or I can't play a note.

As Cato says, "it would be easier if we were under 10." Very true. Learning anything at that age is much easier.

Music is a very important part of our lives. It will be hard work but worth it in the end. Best of luck in your endeavour.

Agreed. A lot of those students you see at piano recitals have been practicing up to 8-9 hours a day 6 days a week.
