Also, keeping in mind that roughly 49% of NZ at the last election still claimed to be Christian or of a Christian-based faith, that's still a lot of people who it means something to... from the wiki page... However, regular church attendance is probably closer to 15% and... "over 53,000 people listed themselves as Jedi in New Zealand's 2001 census (over 1.5% of responses). If the Jedi response had been accepted as valid it would have been the largest non-Christian religion in New Zealand, and second-largest religion overall " So I find 49% a bit hard to believe. If you know almost nothing about the religion you claim to believe in, are you a true believer ? If you dont follow the teachings in the bible, as written not the just passages that suit, are you a really christian ? Perhaps some of the 49% just couldnt bring themselves to admit they are atheist or didnt know what agnostic meant :-) |

| 1373048 | 2014-04-25 05:41:00 | I got to spend Easter in hospital, thank goodness hospital staff aren't prevented from working those days. No wonder nurses are in the top bracket of those voted as being most admired. My beliefs are my own and I do not think I have any right to assume anybody else should have to be the same as me. However, I am inclined to think that the trading laws at such times are ridiculous, specially when areas such as Taupo and New Brighton (?) are exempt. I have no doubt that many staff, who would otherwise have to work, may feel that they would like some time off too. |

Many just cant say no, if you want to keep the job. Ive had a Boss trying to pressure me to taking my annual holidays in 2 day blocks spread through the year, and told another employee he could no longer EVER take annual holidays in 1 week blocks. The idea of a right to having these days off is something worth protecting. Allowing buseness to be open on these 'special' days will mean that for some these days cannot be a holiday. Emergency services will always need to be staffed during these days, shops etc dont really NEED to be open. |

DOL website: For the purposes of rest and recreation, all employees are entitled to enjoy four weeks’ paid annual holidays (or “annual leave”) each year. Public holidays are for the observance of days of national, religious, or cultural significance, which all employees should be entitled to take as leave, where possible. Where it is necessary for an employee to work on a public holiday that work should be specially rewarded. ------------------------------------------------------- Annual holidays can be taken at any time agreed between the employer and the employee. Employees must be given the opportunity to take at least two of the four weeks’ holidays continuously, if they wish to do so. ---------------------------- That's pretty much it......when you take leave is not entirely your decision, it needs to work in with the workplace, and they can require you to take some leave at certain times - or not. You don't like it, move on. You don't need to make ridiculous comments about govts abolishing public holidays. |

| 1373053 | 2014-04-26 00:07:00 | Religion --- I was working in the bush for many years and for something to do in the evening, apart from drinking beer, I studied all the main religions. I came to the conclusion that I should believe in myself, that I was responsible for my actions, no one else! If I had to choose a religion it would be Buddhism. Public Holidays --- Now that the Trade Unions have lost their teeth, the public must ensure that public holidays are retained. From the retailers perspective they give the people time to go shopping. Time and a half plus a day in lieu seems very fare and should be maintained. There should be no trade restrictions on these days. |

| 1373054 | 2014-04-26 03:34:00 | Yeah but what about those who don't want to work on those public holidays, so they can spend them with their family. The fact there's trading restrictions allows this. It's only for a couple of days a year, you'd think people would enjoy it instead of getting pissy about _wanting_ to work :-/ | Chilling_Silence (9) | ||
| 1373055 | 2014-04-26 04:52:00 | As a Christian, I think that Easter and Christmas (both pagan festivals) should be done away with. ??? Ok both have adopted Pagan practices into them but as celebration of the birth and death of Christ I think they are the very definition of Christian holidays. By all means boycott the (delicious) Easter eggs and don't put a tree in your house, but things like that hardly make it a Pagan festival. Anyway I don't care, I'm not religious. I just want to keep all the public holidays we have from a personal perspective and also as part of European heritage in general not just as a religious thing. |
