1373037 2014-04-21 23:17:00 Easter no longer holds any real religious significance to most NZer's, so why should it even be a holiday at all ??
Its all about get days off work, nothing really about Easter at all.
Its now the same with Anzac day, its all about a day off work, not about remembrance. Thats why its
going to be "Mondayized' .

If these 'sacred' days had real significance, we wouldnt be using them to go shopping .

Perhaps you would have enjoyed living in the Middle Ages. You wouldn't have had a day off at all, you would have been attending church and living strictly according to religious rules. Or be executed.

What these days were for originally (and that's debatable, as even the christians borrowed off pagan dates), is completely irrelevant now.

Its a day off to do as you please. Do what you like, you don't have to spend your life nagging other people into behaving the same way.

1373039 2014-04-22 13:02:00 ^^ Agreed.

Also, keeping in mind that roughly 49% of NZ at the last election still claimed to be Christian or of a Christian-based faith, that's still a lot of people who it means something to...

Judging by the crowd of 15,000 of all ages that were at the Cenotaph last year including myself and my fiancee, I would say that there are a LOT of people who are still keen to pay their respects and remember those who have fought on the battle fields of foreign countries and not returned home.

People will always celebrate the various public holidays in their own way, whether that be by remembering the fallen, worshiping or heading out for some retail "therapy", along with 100,000 other crazed shoppers :)

Of those rough 49% it is reliably calculated that come next census approximately 89.5678123% of them will claim to be christian again. In between times, not so many? ;)

1373043 2014-04-23 03:01:00 A lot of people were as children made to go to Sunday School to learn about religion. I remember going to Sunday and learning about the bible. As an adult I do not go to church unless for a reason e.g. weddings and funerals. When I am asked what religion I am I always say Anglican because that was what I was brought up to be. I class myself as a Christian on the census while others might choose something like 'no religion' because they do not go to church. Bobh (5192)

Or because they think religion is fairytales.
