1372679 2014-04-16 22:51:00 Yeah but it's basically just an overglorified sticker of the same credit card you've already got, to be honest. The sticker part just makes it easy to stick to your phone so you don't have to keep it in your wallet.

Anyone can do that right now with any card and any phone, just need one of these (www.trademe.co.nz) :)

1372680 2014-04-17 00:33:00 So now you're not talking about a payment solution, your credit card cannot do that. You're talking about advertising, that's different.

Stores like Z or Foodtown already support NFC payments via PayWave etc.... Do they currently support iBeacon?

From what I can tell it's a combination of the two - you get "notified" of specials as your device is recognized when you enter a store and you make payments via an iBeacon (mashable.com) style app on your phone

I don't think any major retailers support iBeacon here yet.

As far as technologies go, I'm not too fussed either way at this stage. I'm still happy paying for stuff via eftpost.

No retailers support it in NZ at all.

That's just it, EFTPOS vs NFC Debit Card, they're almost identical and quite often interchangeable these days... Moving it to your Cellphone instead of having it as a sticker is just a straight logical choice, there is _zero_ security risk by comparison.

Totally agree and I think that is a scary possibility. I think that on paper, the iBeacon concept is quite awesome but in reality the potential for retailers and marketing departments to abuse its capabilities is huge. Instead of bundles of junk mail being targeted at your letter box you get buzzed with junk adverts when ever you enter a retail store. NO THANK YOU!

I can see it being useful in a museum, art gallery or tour guide situation or maybe in a rugby stadium is part of some in game half time promo thing.

1372684 2014-04-17 03:30:00 Mmmm thought the only advantage that would have over something "Traditional" such as scanning a QR code to be taken to a website with information about the particular museum exhibit you're looking at is that it would be automated. Even the el-cheapo $100 Android phones can scan QR codes, even the ones that can't do NFC. Same goes for iOS and Windows Phone devices.

It's then also not open to abuse and gains maximum market penetration.

I dunno, I'm just not seeing any tangible benefit to using iBeacon, and certainly not for mobile payments in a retail scenario :-/

That's how the iBeacon / gps combo works. The iBeacon works out your location in the store by working out your proximity to the other beacons. Ideally stores have multiple beacons. As you walk past certain displays or retail products the iBeacon senses your location and responds with a message or information.

From what I can tell you have an online shopping cart on your phone screen during your shopping visit and the purchase amount is deducted from your iTunes account.

I guess "ease of use" fits in there somewhere.

Apparently a number of stores in the US are setting up for it.

1372688 2014-04-17 15:10:00 I get the feeling you keep trying to educate me on how it works, in order to try and sell me on the idea of it? But, I'm 100% familiar with how it works already :-/ Chilling_Silence (9)
