Once they become a retail day there will be agitation from the non religious groups and retail sector to have the public holidays removed as well.. I give it 5 years at the most .. |

Are you old enough to remember when it was a closed shop all day. Now it's only a half day. Reason?? Not because the RSA and the like thought it was a good idea but because the retail industry lobbied the Gov of the day to allow shops to open at 1.00PM. I'll bookmark this spot so that when Easter ceases to be a public holiday I can throw it back at you.. |

On top of that, its what this nation was founded on, and the principals it stood for, even if you disagree with the back-story: i.stuff.co.nz We still sing "God defend New Zealand" in our national anthem, we still sometimes use the nickname "God's own" when describing our country . Granted the numbers are declining, but does that mean you can't still enjoy the day off? I'm not a huge fan of what Waitangi Day stands for, it has no fond memories for me at all, it means nothing to me from a religious standpoint or a cultural one. Yet, when the day comes around, I appreciate the time off, and am mature enough to understand the significance of it for others. Are you? |

I believe it was Mondayized last year so Anzac Monday holiday should kick in next year.. |
