Stores like Z or Foodtown already support NFC payments via PayWave etc.... Do they currently support iBeacon? From what I understand, Ibeacon is a payment technology. It's a "2 technologies in 1" type arrangement that enables stores to let customers locate specials instore using the gps on their phone with the help of strategically placed iBeacons in the store. They can then purchase those specials some how via their iTunes account on their phone. The downside of this system is that I could see retailers bombarding customers with location based advertising pop ups via their phones as they enter a store which doesn't sound all that appealing. I'm not sure if any stores in NZ are investigating this technology yet but I know that some big retail chain stores and some sports stadiums in the US are currently trialling the concept. Maybe more people and stores will adopt NFC technology ...? |

They already are, they're being actively pushed by both the credit card companies and the payment terminal companies too. Hell even customers who've used it are eager for places to provide it due to the convenience. |

Hell even customers who've used it are eager for places to provide it due to the convenience. I would have to say that for the mind set of the average NZ shopper and the smaller size of our stores, I'm kinda guessing that NFC technology would be more suited to the "walk in, browse the aisles or wracks, choose your product/outfit/try it on, walk to the counter and pay for it" type of shopper that we are Compared to the walk into the store, get out your phone, find product, fight with other customers to get to your product, compare product prices between stores, spot a bargain in store, browse, compare, browse, then go to another store and buy product cheaper based on price comparison style shopper of the US - (potential iBeacon market) How the two compare (www.mobilepaymentstoday.com) |

| 1372673 | 2014-04-15 01:31:00 | Oh I'm well aware of how both work. Problem is they mention it requires Android-4.0 and up, it actually became available in Android-2.3 (2.3.3 specifically if memory serves me right), so over 98% of all Android devices out there have the software support for it. Point is: All these new "stickers" are, is NFC, which is already enabled on the vast majority of all Android phones which also make up the vast majority of all devices sold in NZ. Add in to the fact there's no additional hardware from a vendor (Payment terminal) to support these, and it really is crazy they've not done something sooner. There is now absolutely zero reason for them to say "Oh it's not secure enough on the phone", when a sticker on the back is. On the phone, you can PIN-protect your device if you so desire. |

| 1372676 | 2014-04-16 21:32:00 | Android phones do, iPhones don't because Apple is developing the iBeacon technology which doesn't require NFC chips. I only have one Android fone with NFC. The others are too old (2 years or more). The ASB method allows everyone with a fone dumb or smart to use this tech.. |

The sticker part just makes it easy to stick to your phone so you don't have to keep it in your wallet. Having the credit-card _in_ the phone would be way cooler! |
