1372142 2014-04-08 21:00:00 Just a few days after the UK government signed a £5.548 million deal with Microsoft for a years worth of Windows XP support, the government of the Netherlands has signed another multi-million Euro deal with the company for continued support of its Windows XP systems, according to Dutch News.

As per the report, around 34000-40000 Dutch national government civil servants are still using Windows XP computers. The deal is expected to provide continued Windows XP support until all government PCs are migrated to a new system, which is due to happen in January 2015.

A similar deal between the software giant and the United Kingdom government is expected to see the former provide critical security updates for XP, Office 2003, and Exchange 2003 until April 8, 2015.

As of tomorrow, Microsoft will no longer support Windows XP for the general public. This means there will no longer be any updates or security patches for the OS, making it vulnerable to security threats. The company has urged XP users to migrate to a more recent supported operating system.

"It's really critical that consumers who still own Windows XP devices recognize that it's not just about upgrading to something new. This is about protecting your PC from security threats, especially if you are using the internet", said Jason Lim, Microsofts general manager of Windows business group.

On the other hand, ATM operators are considering a move to Linux, as it would give them more control over both hardware and software upgrade cycles. Around 95 percent of the automated teller machines around the globe are currently powered by Windows XP.

So MS can continue support but just isnt going to, except for a few.

1372144 2014-04-09 02:32:00 The service packs include previously released security, performance, and stability updates for Windows - so there have been updates installed :) Only not the ones after service packs.

No there is a difference.
It remains tidy and not stuffed full of added on code.
It uses the patched patches.

Anyway eventually I do.......was still on SP2 with XP when I went to Win7.
No Sps on my 7 yet.

1372148 2014-04-09 06:38:00 Its all Sales Bullshit. Stop the support and idiots pay Microsoft for continued support which is made up as they go along.
I have used W95, W98, WMe, Wxp and now W7 and I always have auto update turned off and on the few occasions that there was a problem I look on Microsoft for the appropriate patch. Its all a means of making you dependant on Microsoft so you feel that you need to update your OS.
Just deal with the Malware and the virus and you will be fine. Of course if you are a Bank or some other high security site you would keep everything up to date - maybe!

Activation doesn't seem to work for me. Installed a new Video card, had to reactivate, but unfortunately the numeric code I need to give on the phone is blank.... doh. 3 more days to solve this problem
