1386275 2014-10-15 04:03:00 Anyone know who my republic are? Saw them on TV the other night- had a look at their site, speed wise, they aren't offering anything better than what I get with Vodafone right now.

The faster plans "Up to 200Mbps Download" are for business and if they wont advertise their pricing you can bet its not to cheap.

Cost wise -- they cant offer the same as I'm getting on Vodafone cable / Package for less. Just spoke to Vodafone last week, and they changed our plan, just shaved off close to $100 a month with the new deal

Same with UFB -- no cheaper or faster than Vodafone cable. Quite happy with my 100 + Mbps thank you :)

1386276 2014-10-16 07:59:00 I signed up with Orcon over two years ago. Then it cost less than I was paying for DSL. Just on the 30/10 plan. OK for me. Been fine and can't see why anyone would not go fibre if it is in the street.

Anyway, it's not a matter of if but rather when.

Coz the entry-level plan is the same speed as VDSL2 for most people. My brother in law regularly syncs over 55mbps downstream on VDSL2. I get around 25 myself. Upload is the same. That means that I'm going to be getting 20% more but I have to muck around with changing routers and having my driveway dug up.

For most, it's a nice upgrade, but I'm just giving you a heads up on why a lot of people won't need to go UFB.

1386278 2014-10-16 17:35:00 There was no digging involved here the machine drilled a nice wee hole right under our drive gary67 (56)
1386279 2014-10-16 19:55:00 On a Snap 30/10 plan. Same or similar price as what ADSL would have been. Very happy with it. Alex B (15479)
1386280 2014-10-16 21:09:00 I'll go fibre when I can. Scheduled for my street some time in 2016. I have VDSL and am impressed with it but I still want fibre. I just like the Idea, fibre is immune to many of the issues that affect copper cables and should be much more reliable. There's no stopping someone putting a spade through either type of cable of course but fibre does not have issues with corrosion, water ingress, crosstalk/interference, bad solder joints - etc to the extent that copper does.

I remember before they put a cabinet in my street my connection speed slowly went down over a year as everyone in the neighbourhood started going broadband, that's just one of the things with copper. The more people in the same cable use broadband the more interference there is. Fibre does not do that. It still depends on the ISP's backhaul capacity of course.

1386281 2014-10-17 00:07:00 With Orcon, went as soon as we were turned on down our street. Certainly worth it. On their unlimited/full speed plan (100/50). Costs about $115 per month. Hate visiting people without it now :) dpDesignz (15919)

Not for long. The base Chorus UFB speed is now 100/20. It's just not too many ISP's have implemented it or rolled over their 30/10 customers yet. Plenty of advantages of UFB over copper services with distance from cabinet. In some cases (Snap for example) UFB is cheaper than VDSL.

I have also upgraded to UFB.

Cost is basically the same as my old ADSL plan with what is now Spark.

Was actually a really quick and painless transition with absolutely no extra costs when I made the move.

Great for me as where I am cabinet wise I could not get VDLS and the ADSL I could get topped out at around 8/0.5 - now on the 30/10 speed for now - may make the move up speed wise shortly

1386284 2014-10-17 06:21:00 Yeah we had UFB 30Mbps for about 1.5yr now with Snap with the free Fritzbox but they make you sign 2yr for a free router. We were with ADSL in a good location so we got 18Mbps already anyway. So really for us we haven't noticed much difference apart from a upload ie photographs and emails with attachments. Everywhere I look when I try to advise internet for people, UFB are cheaper. Now you can get it for $79 a month or $85 all you can eat. That might be naked so add $10 for a local number ported to VOIP. I guess we went for it b/c the installation was free and the monthly cost cheaper and the speed would just go up ... I heard maybe some ISPs might start to offer entry plans as 100Mbps - not that for now we would benefit much I mean 30Mbps we can stream video fine including a foreign TV PAD which they use for some hrs every day (they're retired).

But we don't archive movies downloads or upload to backups to clouds or VPN to watch TV shows .... or do gaming.
